Collation:
i, 15 V(150), I+1 (153), i ; almost exclusively quinions ; catchwords present ; pagination in pencil, Western numerals, supplied during digitization.
Script:
Naskh ; clear, somewhat stiff, angular Egyptian hand in a medium to bold line ; mainly serifless with marked tilt to the left, flattened descenders, pointing in distinct dots, alif maqṣūrah pointed as yāʼ.
Support:
European laid paper with 7 laid lines per cm. (vertical), chain lines spaced 26-27 mm. apart (horizontal), three crescents / tre lune watermark (with faces / human profile, roughly 85 mm. long, perpendicular to chains, see pp.4, 14, 210, etc.), and countermark "L A N [?]" (see pp.16, 26, 52, 218, 286, 292, etc.), quite sturdy, cream in color, lightly burnished ; minor ink burn in some gatherings, minor staining, roughly trimmed.
Binding:
Boards covered in dark blue textured cloth with dark blue leather over spine (quarter binding) ; Western style binding ; pastedowns and flyleaves in wove paper printed with a floral vegetal pattern in pink and green ; spine gold-stamped with title and decorative accents over raised bands "حاشية الجمل على الهمزية" ; sewn in white thread over three recessed cords ; stuck-on endbands ; overall in good condition.
Origin:
As appears in colophon on p.303, copied by ʻAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Ibrāhīm ʻAbd Allāh al-Shaybīnī with transcription completed 7 Ramaḍān 1266 [ca. 17 July 1850].
Ownership and History:
On upper pastedown, label with ex libris of James Heyworth-Dunne (d.1974), stamped with inventory number, "Ex Libris | J. Heyworth-Dunne | D. Lit. (London) | No. 9022" ; UM Library inscription on p.3 "Dunning | Heyworth-Dunne | 6-13-51 | 71955" ; glosses and marginal corrections.
