Physical Details:
Collation:

ii, 1 (1), V-1 (10), 15 V(160), I (162), ii ; almost exclusively quinions ; catchwords present (though often cut off) ; foliation in black ink, Hindu-Arabic numerals ; pagination in pencil, Western numerals, supplied during digitization (includes flyleaves).

Layout:

Written in 25 lines per page, occasionally divided to two columns to set off poetry ; frame-ruled (impression of ruling board evident).

Script:

Naskh, characteristically Mamūk ; small, elegant Egyptian or 'Syrian' hand in a medium line ; virtually serifless with slight effect of tilt to the left, some elongation of horizontal strokes, pointing mainly in distinct dots (three dots represented by a curved stroke), foot of isolated lām seated flatly on the baseline with foot of final joined lām descending below the baseline (still quite flat).

Decoration:

Abbreviation symbols (mainly sigla and two-teeth stroke) rubricated ; horizontal strokes of some words accented with red ; textual dividers in the form of red inverted commas.

Support:

non-European laid paper with 10 laid lines per cm. (horizontal) and chain lines grouped in threes with 7-12 mm. between chains and 50-57 between groups (vertical, not straight) ; sturdy, well-sized and burnished ; earlier flyleaves in European laid paper with 8 laid lines per cm., 23 mm. between chain lines and anchor in circle watermark with leaf above and "3" below (67 mm. tall, compare Nikolaev, Watermarks of the Ottoman Empire v.1, no.121).

Binding:

Pasteboards covered in black cloth ; Type III binding (without flap) approaching Western style (obviously not original to the codex, which bears traces of a previous binding with envelope flap) ; contemporary pastedowns and flyleaves in red wove paper, earlier flyleaves in European laid paper (front flyleaf now inverted) ; upper and lower covers carry 'gold'-stamped lozenge-shaped binding ornament ; edges of textblock speckled red ; resewn in cream thread, six stations ; overall in fairly good condition with some staining and deformation to boards, detaching at spine.
