ii, V-2 (8), 22 V(228), I (230), ii ; almost exclusively quinions ; catchwords rarely present ; quire numbering in the form of whole words in the upper outer margin of the recto of the opening leaf of each quire, mainly cut off until the ninth quire ; foliation in black ink, Hindu-Arabic numerals ; pagination in pencil, Western numerals, supplied during digitization (includes flyleaves).

Written in 21 lines per page ; frame-ruled (impression of ruling board evident).

Script:

Naskh ; elegant 'Syrian' or Iraqi [?] hand in a thin to medium line, alternating large bolder lines with more compact lines ; mainly serifless (though right-sloping head-serif appears on occasional ascender) and quite rounded with curvilinear descenders (some sweeping), elongation of horizontal strokes, pointing in distinct dots, kāf occasionally represented by vertical stroke with miniature kāf seated atop it, extensively vocalized.

Support:

non-European laid paper with 8-9 laid lines per cm. (horizontal, 20 in 25-26 mm.) and chain lines grouped in threes (or twos and threes) with 10-14 mm. between chains and 48-55 mm. between groups ; well-sized and burnished, quite smooth, fairly crisp and sturdy, inclusions.

Binding:

Pasteboards covered in black cloth with black leather over spine (quarter binding) ; Western-style binding (not original) ; pastedowns and flyleaves in wove paper ; spine gold-tooled with title and fillets flanking raised bands ; resewn in white thread, six stations ; overall in fair condition with minor abrasion, etc.

Origin:

As appears in colophon on p.461, transcription completed ("...min shughl naskhih faraghtu...") 9 Jumādá I 618 [July 1221] apparently for one Shihāb al-Dīn. As appears in preceding authorial colophon (p.461), composition completed 30 Muḥarram 515 [April 1121].

Ownership and History:

Effaced statement on front flyleaf (p.3) ; ownership statement on 'title page' (p.5) dated 855 [1451 or 2] in name of Aḥmad ibn Mubārakshāh al-Ḥanafī (d.1457 or 8), reads "صار من فضل الله الخفي لاحمد بن مباركشاه الحنفي سنة خمس وخمسين وثمانمائة هذا الجزء وما فيه [؟]" ; also on 'title page' (p.5) ownership statement dated 881 [1476 or 7] in name of Aḥmad ibn Ismāʻīl al-Qādirī [?] al-Jawharī al-Ḥanafī, reads "من كتب الواثق بالجليل احمد بن اسماعيل القادري [؟] الجوهري الحنفي في سنة ۸۸۱" ; circular seal impression on incipit page (p.6) and p.462 ; occasional marginal corrections.
