Fine early copy of the commentary by Shihāb al-Dīn Abū al-Ḥāmid Aḥmad ibn Maḥmūd al-Sīwāsī (d.1400) upon the celebrated work on the law of inheritance by Sirāj al-Dīn Muḥammad ibn Muḥammad al-Sajāwandī (fl. 12th cent.).

"الحمد لله الذي ابرز بالفرائض بهجة رياض الشرع واظهر بها [؟] قوانين الاصل والفرع ... اما بعد فلما كان خير ما يصرف الانسان عن وسعه ... هو علم الفرائض ... وكان مما صنف فيه كتاب الشيخ الامام ... سراج الائمة تاج الامة ... وقد كنت سامعا من افواه العلماء والسن الفضلاء فيه ابحاثا شريعة ... فوجه عنان الالتماس الي جمع من الطلبة المترددين على ان اجمع لهم تلك الفوائد كما سمعتها عنهم بالفاظهم الفرائد فجمعتها جمعا يتضح به الكتاب غاية الوضوح ..."

"Scribal," reads "تم شرح الفرائض بعون الله وحسن توفيقه هذا الشرح الشريف كتب وقوبل وصحح بقدر الوسع والامكان من النسخة التي كتبت وقوبلت من النسخة التي كتبت بيد الشارح شهاب الدين رحمة الله عليه رحمة واسعة رحمة الله لمن دعا لكاتبه ولسائر المسلمين والمسلمات يا قاضي الحاجات امين يا رب العالمين تاريخ سنة خمس وعشرون وثمانمائة تم الكتاب وقت الظهور شهر بورسة [؟]"

Collation:
5 V(50), IV (58), i ; almost exclusively quinions ; catchwords present ; pagination in pencil, Western numerals, supplied during digitization.
Script:
Naskh with influence of nastaʻlīq ; fine Turkish or 'Syrian' [?] hand ; virtually serifless with marked tilt to the right, very slight effect of words descending to baseline, wajh al-hirr usually used for initial hāʼ, pointing in strokes rather than distinct dots, elongation of horizontal strokes, free assimilation of letters, etc.
Decoration:
Abbreviation symbols, keywords and section headings rubricated ; several diagrams in red and brown ink tracing inheritance distribution.
Support:
non-European (likely Arab) laid paper with 8 laid lines per cm. (vertical, fairly distinct), chain lines (horizontal) grouped in threes with 9-11 mm. between chains and 40-50 between groups ; somewhat cloudy formation, some inclusions, quite well-burnished with burnisher's marks visible.
Binding:
Textblock only, covers lacking ; traces of adhesive and paper cover (see scrap between pp.64-65 carrying label with shelfmark) at spine ; sewn in blue thread, two stations, missing from many quires ; in fair condition considering covers gone, some spine slant, minor abrasion and tears.

Former Shelfmarks:
From inscription on 'title page' (p.1) and trace of paper cover (between pp.64-65) "IL 203" (likely supplied by Yahuda, see acquisitions slip).
Origin:
As appears in colophon on p.116, copied and collated from a copy itself copied and collated from a copy in the hand of the author, with transcription completed 825 [1421 or 2] in Bursa [?].
Ownership and History:
Ownership statement on 'title page' (p.1) in name of Ibrāhīm ibn Muḥarram al-Basnawī [al-Busnawī] (İbrahim bin Muharrem el-Bosnevî), reads "مما تملكه الفقير اليه تعالى ابراهيم بن محرم البسنوى غفر الله له ولوالديه واحسن اليهما واليه" ; dated statement on 'title page' (p.1) partially lost to damage ; numerous glosses and marginal corrections ; many excerpts at opening and close of codex.
