Script:

Nastaʻlīq (talik) ; an elegant Turkish hand ; virtually serifless with tilt to the right, slight effect of words descending to baseline, partially vocalized ; text following preface (p.14) supplied in a different hand.

Decoration:

Keywords, section headings, and abbreviation symbols rubricated ; overlining in red ; textual dividers in the form of inverted commas in red.

Support:

European laid paper with 6-7 laid lines per cm. (vertical), chain lines spaced 26-27 mm. apart (horizontal), crown-star-crescent watermark (see p.22,23, etc.) and "S S" under trefoil countermark (see p.340) ; sturdy and dense, quite well-burnished.

Binding:

Pasteboards covered in dark red-brown leather ; Type II binding (with flap) ; board linings in dull yellow-tinted paper ; upper and lower covers carry blind-stamped mandorla (filled with vegetal composition, compare Déroche class. OSv 1) ; sewn in light brown or grey thread, two stations ; worked chevron endbands in cream and or light yellow, fair condition, some losses to tailband ; overall in fair condition with abrasion, some lifting and losses of leather, minor delamination of upper board, etc. ; numerous repairs to board edges, spine, and flap in red and tan leathers.

As appears in colophon on p.426, copied by Walī ibn Shaʻbān (Veli bin Şaban) with transcription completed Muḥarram 1080 [June 1669]. As appears in preceding authorial colophon (also on p.426), composition completed 1 Rajab 981 [October 1573].

Ownership and History:

Detailed waqf statement on p.13 dated 1197 [1782 or 3] in name of al-Sayyid al-Ḥājj Ibrāhīm, al-shahīr bi-Naqībʻzādah al-Ruhāwī (Nakibzade Hacı İbrahim Ruhâvî), likely of Şanlıurfa (Urfa), accompanied by oval seal impression, statement reads "...الحمد لله رب العالمين ... اما بعد فقد وقفت هذا الكتاب المسمى بهدية الصعلوك في شرح تحفة الملوك ووضعته بدار كتبي خالصا لوجه الله وابتغاء لمرضاته وراجيا من المستفيدين الدعاء بالخير بحيث لا يباع ولا يرهن ولا يوهب ولا يخرج من الدار المذكورة ولا يمنع احد من الاستعمال به فمن اراد الاستنساخ ففي ذلك المكان وان ينفعنا الله به يوم لا ينفع مال ولا بنون الا من اتى الله بقلب سليم فمن بدله بعد ما سمعه فانما اثمه على الذين يبدلونه ان الله سميع عليم وانا الفقير الى الله الكريم السيد الحاج ابراهيم الشهير بنقيب زاده الرهاوى سنه ۱۱۹۷" ; two effaced ownership statements each accompanied by seal impression (oval and octagonal) on p.13 ; numerous glosses and notabilia (side-heads) ; occasional interlinear and marginal corrections.
