Layout:

Written in 18-21 lines per page ; for sections of poetry, written area divided to two columns to set off verses.

Script:

Naskh ; mainly one clear Egyptian or 'Syrian' hand (though ink and pen thickness varies, and some sections may be provided in different hands) ; virtually serifless with slight effect of tilt to the left and of words descending to baseline, some elongation of horizontal strokes, curvilinear descenders, pointing mainly in distinct dots though casual, kāf mashqūqah preferred (even final kāf).

Decoration:

Keywords, section headings, and abbreviation symbols (mainly two-teeth stroke overlining keywords, signes de renvois, etc.) rubricated ; textual dividers in the form of red hāʼ, three inverted commas, etc.

Support:

European laid paper with 8 laid lines per cm. (vertical), chain lines spaced 29 mm. apart (horizontal), and anchor in circle with trefoil above watermark (see p.50, 56, etc.) ; well-burnished to glossy, dark cream in color ; repairs at opening in wove paper ; some ink burn (see pp.201-206, etc.) ; staining and tide lines.

Binding:

Pasteboards covered in green-blue cloth ; Type II binding (with flap) ; pastedowns and flyleaves in a white and blue wove paper ; resewn in white thread, eight stations ; overall in good condition ; attached to the textblock in an inverted manner, with flap on effective upper cover rather than lower cover.

Origin:

As appears in colophon on p. 276, Fuṣūṣ al-ḥikam copied by Aḥmad ibn Abī al-Khayr known as al-Khawlī with transcription completed 23 Dhū al-Ḥijjah 1017 [March 1609]. As appears in colophon on p.294, final work executed by the same copyist with transcription completed in the latter part of the year 1017 [1609]. Opening work likely copied around the same time.

Ownership statement on opening 'title page' (p.3) in name of ʻAbd al-Raḥmān al-Manzalāwī al-Ḥanafī ( عبد الرحمن المنزلاوي الحنفي ) dated Muḥarram 1061 [1650] ; reading / study notice at close of Fuṣūṣ al-ḥikam (p.276) in name of ʻAlī ibn al-Muʻallim Muḥammad al-Dimyāṭī ( علي بن المعلم محمد الدمياطي ) dated 1026 [1617] ; numerous marginal corrections (most marked with accompanying signes de renvois) and glosses.
