Fine copy of al-Jaghmīnī's (d.1344) Qānūnchah, a compendium on medicine and an extract from Ibn Sīnā’s Qānūn. Brockelmann treats this author as distinct from an astronomer of the same name who died in 1221.

II (4), V-4 (6), 11 V(120), V-1 (129) ; chiefly quinions ; replacement folia (pp.6-8 and pp.17-18) ; catchwords present ; pagination in pencil, Western numerals, supplied during digitization (includes flyleaves).


Written in 9 lines per page ; frame-ruled.


Nastaʻlīq ; bold, elegant hand ; virtually serifless with very slight effect of words descending to baseline, occasionally more exaggerated, quite rounded with curvilinear descenders, elongation and exaggerated thickness of horizontal strokes ; text of opening replacement folia (pp.6-8) in a different hand, the same as that of the ownership statement for the physician Muṣṭafá ibn ʻAbd al-ʻAzīz on 'title page' (p.5) ; replacement leaf carrying pp.17-18 in still a different hand, though possibly that of one of the later owners.


Overlining in red ; some notabilia (side-heads) rubricated.


non-European (likely Arab) laid paper of perhaps several types ; mainly with with 10 laid lines per cm. (horizontal) and chain lines (vertical) possibly grouped in threes with 8-10 mm. between chains, sturdy though thin, well-burnished ; opening replacement leaves in European laid paper with traces of three crescents and crown-star-crescent watermarks ; later replacement (leaf carrying pp.17-18) in different European laid paper with "E B" visible.


Pasteboards covered in brown leather (upper cover) and cream colored textile [linen] (lower cover as well as spine and portion of upper cover to complete attachment of this replacement) ; Type III binding (following repair) ; upper board lining in blue-tinted laid paper ; lower board lining in untinted laid paper ; upper cover bears tooled central motif and accents in annular stamps along with a tooled rule-border ; sewn mainly in heavy cream thread, two stations, also blue thread and four stations ; overall in fair condition with some abrasion, lifting and losses of leather, staining, some spine slant (slightly cocked), etc.

Ownership and History:

Ownership statement dated 1 Jumādá I 1127 [May 1715] partially visible on verso of opening replacement leaf (p.2) in name of one ʻAbd Allāh ... [?] ; on verso of second replacement leaf (p.4) ownership statement dated Ramaḍān 1231 [July-August 1816] in name of Muḥammad ibn al-Ḥājj Muḥammad Ṣābūnī [?] (محمد ابن الحاج محمد صابوني [؟]) and partially effaced ownership statement dated 1285 [1868] in Ḥalab (Aleppo) in name of one ... al-Mārūnī ( الماروني ) ; on 'title page' (p.5), ownership statement in name of al-Shaykh Muṣṭafá ibn ʻAbd al-ʻAzīz, who along with his father was a physician (طبيب) in Ḥalab and who likely supplied the text of the opening replacement leaves (pp.6-8), and an ownership statement in name of Muḥammad al-Khalāṣī (محمد الخلاصي) and of his son Muṣṭafá (الحاج مصطفى الخلاصي) ; occasional marginal corrections, glosses and notabilia (side-heads).
