Written in 19 lines per page.


Naskh ; an angular Egyptian [?] or 'Syrian' hand in a medium to bold line ; serifless with dramatic effect of tilt to the right, elongation of horizontal strokes, occasional effect of words descending to baseline, mainly rectilinear descenders, pointing in strokes rather than distinct dots, kāf mashkūlah (mashqūqah) preferred, some free assimilation of letters.

European laid paper of two main types ; main type with 10 laid lines per cm. (vertical), chain lines spaced 37 mm. apart (horizontal), and large bunch of grapes watermark (noose on stem, drop-shaped berries, see p.8, 13, 28, etc.), thin and transluscent though sturdy, dark cream to beige in color, quite well-burnished ; another type with 11 laid lines per cm. (vertical), chain lines spaced 27-37 mm. apart (horizontal), and crossed swords watermark (see p.432, 433, etc.), lighter in color, less well-burnished, still fairly transluscent ; some ink burn, staining and tide lines.


Pasteboards covered in lavender paper with tan leather over spine and fore edge flap ; Type II binding (with flap) ; board linings in pale blue paper ; sewn in red thread, two stations ; worked chevron endbands in magenta and cream, good condition ; overall in poor condition with lower cover fully detached, spine detaching, lifting and losses of leather and paper, staining, abrasion, etc. ; housed in box for protection.

Several ownership statement on 'title page' (p.1) including statement dated 1177 [1763 or 4] in name of Muṣṭafá al-Faraḍī [al-Farḍī] reads "دخل في ملك الفقير مصطفى الفرضي غفر له سنة ١١٧٧", statement in name of ʻAlī ibn Nāṣir al-Dīn al-Ṭurābulusī reads "الحمد لله من كتب الفقير الى لطف ربه ... علي بن ناصر الدين الطرابلسي عفي عنهم ...", statement dated 29 Rabīʻ I 1260? [April 1844?] in name of ʻAbd al-Ghanī ibn al-Shaykh Ḥasan al-Bayṭār[?] statement reads "مما تشرف به الفقير عبد الغني بن الشيخ حسن البيطار [؟] ٢٩ في ربيع ... سنة ١٢٦٠ " etc. ; occasional glosses, marginal corrections and notabilia (side-heads, mainly marked مطلب).
