Physical Details:
Collation:
4 V(40), II (44), III (50), 5 V(100), 2 IV(116), i ; chiefly quinions ; catchwords present ; quire numbering in the form of Hindu-Arabic numerals on the opening recto of each quire, begins again with Sharḥ Muqaddimat al-Sanūsī ; pagination in pencil, Western numerals, supplied during digitization (includes inserts).
Script:
Naskh ; at least two hands, possibly Egyptian [?] in narrow and bolder lines ; one more angular, cramped and compact ; the other larger and more elegant ; mainly serifless (though occasional serifs irregularly appear) with effect of tilt to the left, elongation of horizontal strokes, curvilinear descenders, open and closed counters, pointing mainly in distinct dots.
Decoration:
Keywords and section headings rubricated in some texts ; overlining in red ; textual dividers in the form of red discs ; hāʼ musalsalah of قوله in quite ornate flourishes in red (see p.15, etc.).
Support:
European laid paper of two main types ; opening type with 6-7 laid lines per cm. (vertical), chain lines spaced 23-25 mm. apart (horizontal), and three crescents watermark (80 mm. long, perpendicular to chains, see p.12, 34, etc.), well-burnished to glossy, thick and sturdy, fairly crisp ; another type with 9-10 laid lines per cm. (vertical), chain lines spaced 28 mm. apart (horizontal), and hand / glove watermark (see p.90, compare nos. 11 and 12 in Velkov, Les Filigranes dans les documents Ottoman), thinner and far less glossy.
Binding:
Pasteboards covered in light pink laid paper with spine, fore edge flap, and fore edge of upper board in dark red leather ; Type II binding (with flap) ; board linings in untinted European laid paper (watermarks visible) ; sewn in white thread, two stations, many threads broken ; worked endbands in yellow and light blue over red leather core, fair condition thought with losses exposing core ; overall in somewhat poor condition with significant abrasion, staining, lifting and losses of paper and leather, flap detaching, delamination of boards, etc.
Accompanying Materials:
a. Acquisitions slip from Yahuda (pp.1-2) -- b. Portion of a page from a printed book (in Turkish, possibly from a book catalogue) (pp.3-4).
Former Shelfmarks:
From inner front cover, "M. 15" (likely supplied by Yahuda, see acquisitions slip).
Origin:
Lacks dated colophon ; collation statement on p.203 provides a rough terminus ante quem of 1708 ; paper, etc. suggest mid to late 17th or early 18th century dating.
Ownership and History:
On opening 'title page' (p.5), waqf statement (possibly dated 1200 [1785 or 6] ) accompanied by circular seal impression (possibly dated 1167 [1753 or 4]) in name of al-Ḥājj Muḥammad Saʻīd ( الحاج محمد سعيد ), statement reads "وقد وقفت هذا المجموع وقفا صحيحا مرعيا شرائطه وانا الفقير الحاج محمد سعيد" ; on p.93 and p.205, repeated waqf statements in name of the aforementioned al-Ḥājj Muḥammad Saʻīd ( الحاج محمد سعيد ) each accompanied by his seal ; collation / correction / audition statement at close of Sharḥ Umm al-barāhīn (p.203) dated 27 Rabīʻ II 1120 [July 1708], indicated the text was read in the hearing of al-Mullā Ilyās, statement reads "بلغ هذا الشرح مقابلة وتصحيحا وقرأة على الاستاذ الملا الياس وختمناه عليه يوم الاحد السابع وعشرين من شهر ربيع الثاني سنة ۱۱۲۰" ; glosses and marginal corrections ; collation notes.
