Summary:

Well-glossed copy of al-Taftāzānī’s commentary on the popular creed, al-ʻAqāʼid al-Nasafīyah of Abū Ḥafs ʻUmar Najm al-Dīn al-Māturīdī al-Nasafī (d.1142). On the final two leaves of the codex, an excerpt from a grammatical work (Tuḥfah fī al-naḥw?) attributed to Muḥammad ibn ʻAbd Allāh al-Anṣārī has been added later in a different hand.

i, V-1 (9), 4 V(49), V-1 (58), i ; Chiefly quinions ; quire numbering in the form of whole words in the upper counter corner of the recto of the first leaf of each quire (first apparent in the third) ; pagination in pencil, Western numerals, supplied during digitization (includes inserts).

Layout:

Written in 19 lines per page ; frame-ruled.

Script:

Naskh ; clear 'Syrian' or Egyptian hand in a medium line ; serifless, fluid and rounded with curvilinear descenders, pointing mainly in distinct dots, kāf mashkūlah (mashqūqah) preferred, the lām alif al-warrāqīyah preferred ; main hand with slight effect of tilt to the right, occasionally more exaggerated ; second quire (pp.25-44) supplied in a somewhat stiffer hand with very slight effect of tilt to the left, tails of many descenders (lām, nūn, sīn, ṣāḍ, etc.) quite flat and shortened (not continuing up to complete bowl) ; from p.111 to close, aspect changes to be slightly more compact with marked inclination to the right, descenders of rāʼ and mīm fairly straight, short and stiff, hāʼ looking like two inverted commas ; partially vocalized ; final work supplied in still a different hand.

Decoration:

Some keywords, abbreviation symbols, excerpts of text being commented upon, corrections and glosses rubricated ; others in blue ink ; textual dividers in the form of red discs.

Support:

non-European laid paper with 8-9 laid lines per cm. (vertical) and chain lines grouped in threes (horizontal) with 8-10 mm. between chains and 29-39 mm. between groups (see pp.32, 64, 102, etc.) ; well-burnished, sturdy and fairly smooth ; staining and tidelines.

Binding:

Boards covered in dark red textured paper (resembling a pebble grain) with red leather over spine and fore edge flap ; Type II binding (with flap) ; pastedowns and flyleaves in red-tinted wove paper ; resewn in light blue thread, four stations, perhaps originally in red thread ; overall in poor condition with abrasion, lifting of paper and leather, minor spine slant (slightly cocked), etc.

Traces of former owners' marks (now effaced) on 'title page' (p.5) ; extensive marginal and interlinear glosses ; occasional corrections ; collation marks "ثم بلغ" etc.
