Script:
Naskh ; small Turkish or Persian hand ; occasional right-sloping head serif on alif, lām, etc. ; slight effect of tilt to the left ; kāf mashkūlah (mashqūqah) preferred ; mainly closed counters ; occasional effect of words descending to baseline.
Decoration:
Keywords and section headings rubricated ; some overlining and textual dividers in the form of inverted commas in red.
Support:
European laid paper with 7 laid lines per cm. (horizontal) and chain lines spaced 26-27 mm. (vertical) ; watermark of crown, with star and crescent above (compare Heawood 1132) ; well-burnished ; much staining, some losses.
Binding:
Pasteboards covered in combed marbled paper (blue, pink, salmon, yellow, etc.) with spine and edges/turn-ins in red-brown leather ; Type III binding (without flap) ; board linings in laid paper ; sewn in light brown thread, two stations ; in very poor condition with much abrasion, water and pest damage, lifting and losses of leather, delamination and losses of boards, etc. ; housed in box for protection.
Origin:
As appears in colophon on p.443, copied by Ibrāhīm ibn Muṣṭafá ibn [?]. Transcription finished latter Shawwāl 1071 [June 1661].
Ownership and History:
Bookplate of British Museum, London on interior of upper cover, "British Museum, London. No. 55. Jami al-rumuz." ; circular seal impression with figure of goat/gazelle in purple ink as well as purple penciled inscription "87" in Western numerals on fol.2a (p.3) ; on blue-tinted paper pasted on ’title page’ (p.5), a detailed waqf statement in the name of al-Sayyid ʻAbd Allāh Adīb (Abdullah Edip), known as Jannatʹzādah (Cennet-zade), qāḍī of Erzurum, accompanied by his seal, reads: "وقفت وقفا صحيحا شرعيا بشرط ان لا يخرج من بيت الكتب الذي بنيته في اتصال داري الا لعلماء نفس ارضروم بكفيل اورهن قوي وانا الفقير السيد عبد الله اديب الشهير بجنت زاده القاضي بمدينة ارضروم في سنة اثنى وستين ومائتين والف" ; occasional marginal corrections, glosses and notabilia (some rubricated).
