Written in 27 lines per page ; frame-ruled.

Script:

Naskh ; bold, heavy line ; compact ; slight tilt to left; adheres to baseline ; freely ligatured (with final hāʼ or tāʼ marbūtah assimilated with previous rāʼ or dāl) ; rightward descenders tapered ; counters tend to be open ; superscripting of final letters such as nūn following alif ; prominent waw with striking open counter ; partially vocalized, in same black ink ; interlinear and marginal glosses in several different hands while some glosses appear to be in same hand as main text.

Decoration:

Fine headpiece on incipit page (p.2) consisting of rectangular panel carrying the basmalah surmounted by scalloped semi-circular piece (dome) containing swirling floral design in reddish-pink on light reddish-pink field ; tailpiece (p.361) surrounding triangular explicit and colophon in field of light reddish-pink including swirling floral design in similar reddish-pink ink ; written area throughout surrounded by red rule-border ; section headings, notabilia (sideheads), some interlinear corrections and abbreviation symbols rubricated ; text commented upon overlined in red ; textual dividers in red.

Support:

European laid paper with 13 laid lines per cm. (vertical) and chain lines spaced 28 mm. apart (horizontal) ; watermarks include eagle and a bird within scrollwork.

Binding:

Pasteboards covered in marbled paper (in yellow, blue, and pink) with red over spine, foredge flap and edges/turn-ins ; board linings in laid paper ; green lining at interior of foreedge flap and spine ; sewn in red thread, two stations ; endbands in white thread over leather core, lost at head and showing remains at tail ; spine has been repaired at head and tail with strip of red leather pasted across spine ; repair at tail is partially lost and leather over spine is splitting ; leather at head and tail of spine cracking and abraded and endbands damaged but otherwise codex is sound, in overall fair condition.

As appears in colophon on p.361, copied by Aḥmad ibn Ḥasan with transcription completed ("qad tamma hādhā al-kitāb ... bi-qalam...") in the year 1248 [1832 or 3].

Ownership and History:

Bookplate of British Museum, London on interior of upper cover, "British Museum, London. No. 127. Kitab al-mutawwal, commentary on al-Bayan of al-Talkhis." ; circular seal impression with figure of goat/gazelle in purple ink as well as inscription "247" in Western numerals on verso of final leaf (p.364) ; circular waqf-seal impression in black ink appears on 'title page' (p.1) and several places throughout, reads: "هذا وقف الراجي فيض الصمدي الشيخ احمد ضيا الدين ابن مصط فى الخالدي فمن بدله بعد ما سمعه فانما اثمه على الذين يبدلونه" ; occasional collation marks appear in margins, including use of نسخة to indicate variants.
