Summary:

Fine copy of a supergloss on a gloss by ʻImād al-Dīn Yaḥyá al-Kāshī (ca.1350) upon the commentary by Kamāl al-Dīn Masʻūd al-Shirwānī al-Rūmī (d.1499) on al-Samarqandī's (13th c.) treatise on disputation, Risālah fī ādāb al-baḥth. Followed by the text of al-Kāshī's gloss and al-Shirwānī's commentary.

Naskh-nastaʻlīq ; virtually serifless ; mainly closed counters ; slight effect of words descending to baseline ; final words/letters of line often superscript ; exaggerated thickness of horizontal strokes.

Decoration:

Keywords and abbreviations rubricated ; overlining in red ; crude rectangular 'headpiece' in red ink above opening on p.4 ; written area surrounded by red rule-border.

Support:

European laid paper with 9 laid lines per cm. (vertical) and chain lines spaced 26 mm. apart (horizontal) ; paschal lamb watermark in four-loped circle [compare Piccard inv. J 340/no. 86802 / Venice, 1662). Heawood 2840 (Verona, 1678) Piccard inv. J 340/no. 86801 (Innsbruck, 1625)] ; fairly sturdy and well-burnished ; some staining.

Binding:

Pasteboards covered in laid marbled paper (blue and white) with spine, fore-edge flap, and edges/turn-ins in red-brown leather ; Type II binding (with flap) ; board linings in laid paper ; sewn in pink thread, two stations, with primaries in yellow ; only traces of worked endbands remain ; overall in poor condition with significant abrasion, staining, some lifting and losses of leather (particularly at fore-edge flap), delamination of boards, fore-edge flap detaching at lower cover, etc.

Origin:

As appears in colophon on p.113-114, copied by Maḥmūd ibn Ḥājjī Muḥammad (Mahmut bin Hacı Mehmet) in the medrese of the Nişancı Mehmet Paşa complex in Istanbul. Transcription of the first work finished in Dhū al-Qaʻdah 1083 [February-March 1673]. As appears on p.127, transcription of second work finished 1083 [February-March 1673]. Colophon on p.196 is quite difficult to make out, but seems to indicate that transcription of final work was completed in 1084 [1673 or 1674]. Paper certainly suggests 17th century.

Ownership and History:

Bookplate of British Museum, London on interior of upper cover, "British Museum, London. No. 153. Tracts on dialectics." ; circular seal impression with figure of goat/gazelle in purple ink as well as inscription "415" in Western numerals on front flyleaf (p.1) ; on 'title page' (p.3) traces of ownership statement accompanied by oval seal impression, both now struck-through and obscured ; also on 'title page' (p.3) ownership statement accompanied by octagonal seal impression ("عبده احمد ..."), statement reads "من ممتلكات الفقير اليه عز شانه السيد احمد بن مصطفى بن احمد الشهير بديوانى [دلوانى؟] بارضروم عفي عنهم" ; on paper (blue-tinted) pasted on 'title page' (p.3), a detailed waqf statement in the name of al-Sayyid ʻAbd Allāh Adīb (Abdullah Edip), known as Jannatʹzādah (Cennet-zade), qāḍī of Erzurum, accompanied by his seal, reads: "وقفت وقفا صحيحا شرعيا على ان لا يخرج من بيت الكتب الملتصق بداري الا لعلماء سكنوا بارضروم بكفيل مرعى اورهن قوي وانا الفقير اليه عز شانه السيد عبد الله اديب الشهير بجنت زاده القاضي بمدينة ارضروم في سنة اثنى وستين ومائتين والف" ; a few glosses and marginal corrections.
