V+1 (11), V (21), VI (33), 3 V(63), I (65), 6 V(125), I (127), 2 V(147) ; chiefly quinions ; mid-bifolium of second quire was mistakenly placed between first and second quire such that it was mistakenly paginated pp.23-26, now correctly placed between pp.34-35 ; catchwords present though occasionally lacking, consistently appear on final leaf of each quire ; pagination in pencil, Western numerals, supplied during digitization.


Written in 29 lines per page ; frame-ruled (impression of ruling board evident).


Naskh with influence of nastaʻlīq ; elegant Turkish or Persian (?) hand ; virtually serifless ; effect of slight tilt to the right and occasional descent of words to the baseline ; final words and letters of lines occasionally superscript ; mainly closed counters ; some sweeping descenders, more tapered ; some free assimilation of letters ; point of nūn joined to bowl.


Text rubricated with keywords, section headings, overlining, etc. in red.


non-European (likely Arab) laid paper with 8-9 laid lines per cm. (horizontal) and chain lines arranged in groups of three (vertical) with 9-14 mm. between the chains and 31-42 mm. between the groups.


Pasteboards covered in red brown leather ; Type II binding (with flap) ; doublures in brown leather ; upper and lower covers each bear a superbly executed gold-tooled mandorla accented by fine rope border extending to form pendants and filled with interlace (compare Weisweiler W 89-95), along with tooled rope border and gold-tooled cornerpieces ; design is continued on envelope flap ; sewn in cream thread, two stations, though sewing broken or completely lost in many quires ; many loose leaves ; endbands virtually gone, only traces remain ; in fair condition with abrasion, staining, lifting of leather at spine and fore-edge though cover is nearly entirely detached from textblock and ill-fitting (large).

Lacks dated colophon. Paper may suggest 16th century.

Bookplate of British Museum, London on inner front cover, "British Museum, London. No. 26. Glosses on al-Mawakif." ; circular seal impression with figure of goat/gazelle in purple ink as well as inscription "181" in Western numerals on fol.1a (p.1) ; ownership statement (accompanied by oval seal impression) "تملكه الفقير السيد عبد الله المفتى بارزنجان ..." and waqf statement "وقف السيد الحاج عبد الله المفتى بكتب خانه المعموره بارزنجان سنه ١١۸۱" in name of al-Sayyid al-Ḥājj ʻAbd Allāh, muftī in Erzincan on fol.1a (p.1) ; also on fol.1a (p.1) an ownership/purchase statement " ... في سلك ملك المحتاج الى الله ... الفقير الضعيف ... علي اشتريت هذا الكتاب في ۱۴ [؟] رمضان المبارك" and another ownership statement "على چلبى افندى" ; on fol.147b (p.294) an ownership statement reading, " بو فقير بو كتاب ... اسكدار مدرس محمود چلبى افندى ..." ; marginal corrections and glosses ; collation marks "بلغ" appear regularly throughout ; at least one thread tab (finger tab, bookmarker).
