Script:
Naskh ; mainly an elegant Eastern hand, with variation in line thickness ; partially seriffed with occasional rightward head-serif on joined alif and leftward head-serif on medial lām ; mainly open counters ; bowls of letters elongated ; descenders mainly tapered.
Decoration:
Section headings, some glosses and corrections, and abbreviation symbols rubricated ; textual dividers in the form of inverted commas and hāʼ or numeral khamsah shape "۵" in red.
Support:
mainly non-European (Persian) laid paper with 9 laid lines per cm. (vertical) and sporadic chain lines, crisp and very well sized and burnished ; a second type (likely European laid) shows 15 laid lines per cm. (vertical) and 23 mm. between chain lines (horiztonal) ; tide-lines from water damage on edges of pages not effecting readability.
Binding:
Pasteboards covered in brown leather ; Type II binding (with flap) ; board linings in light orange laid paper ; upper and lower covers bear blind-stamped mandorla (red leather onlays) filled with vegetal decoration ; sewn in grey thread, four stations ; headband intact, tailband missing ; in fair condition with some abrasion and staining, foreedge flap detaching at lower cover, cover detaching at spine, etc.
Origin:
As appears in colophon on p.278, copied by Muḥammad ibn Aḥmad ibn ʻAlī al-Qārī al-Tibrīzī. Transcription completed final day of Muḥarram 884 [April 1479].
Ownership and History:
Bookplate of British Museum, London on interior of upper cover, "British Museum, London. No.107. Talkhis al-miftah." ; circular seal impression with figure of goat/gazelle in purple ink as well as inscription "434" in Western numerals on front flyleaf (p.1) ; ownership statement in red ink on 'title page' (p.3) reads : "بو دخى خالد افندى زاده كتابلر ... در ٢٥ ذي القعده سنه ١۲۲۰ [؟]" ; faint circular seal impression in black ink also on 'title page' (p.3) ; numerous marginal and interlinear glosses ; occasional corrections.
