Layout:

Written in 13 and roughly 7 lines per page ; written area of third work divided to three columns with verbs appearing in the two outer columns and elucidation on the diagonal in the center column ; frame-ruled.

Script:

Large, bold naskh-nastaʻlīq ; sans serif ; characteristic descent of words to baseline ; sweeping descenders and elongated horizontal strokes.

Decoration:

Keywords, some titles, section headings, and some glosses rubricated ; textual dividers in the form of red discs ; written area of incipit page surrounded by gold frame, written area elsewhere surrounded by red rule-border.

Support:

European laid paper with 9 laid lines per cm. (horizontal) and chain lines spaced 28 mm. apart ; watermarks include triple mount with bird in profile in circle (compare Piccard no.153741 and 153742) ; well-sized and burnished ; much staining.

Binding:

Pasteboards covered in marbled paper (blue and salmon) with spine, fore-edge flap and edges/turn-ins in dark red leather ; Type II binding (with flap) ; board linings in laid paper ; sewn in pink thread, two stations ; in poor condition with much abrasion, lifting and losses of paper and leather, delamination of boards, pest damage, etc.

Origin:

Lacks dated colophon. Dated ownership statements provided a terminus ante quem of 1778 [Jumādá I 1191 and Muḥarram 1192] though paper certainly suggests 17th century.

Ownership and History:

Bookplate of British Museum, London on interior of upper cover, "British Museum, London. No. 70. Grammatical works by Abu Suud, al-Zanjani, & Ibn Jinni." ; circular waqf-seal impression in black ink appears on ’title page’ (p.3) and several places throughout, reads: "هذا وقف الراجي فيض الصمدي الشيخ احمد ضيا الدين ابن مصطفى الخالدي فمن بدله بعد ما سمعه فانما اثمه على الذين يبدلونه" ; numerous ownership statements and seal impressions on p.3, p.93, p.171 and pp.225-228, particularly in the name of one Mustafa Efendi ; dated statements appear on p.225 "ما شاء الله سلطان سليم كتابت [كتاب؟] مصطفى افندى اوستاذ احمد افندى بدروس ... جا سنه ۱۱٩١" and on p.227 "... في ۱۰ م سنه ۱۱۹۲" ; numerous glosses and marginal corrections.
