Fine copy of the manual of arithmetic Bahāʼ al-Dīn Muḥammad ibn Ḥusayn al-ʻĀmilī (d.1621), followed by commentary by ʻUmar ibn Aḥmad al-Māʼī al-Chillī (fl. 17th cent.). Copyist has transcribed what appears to be the opening of another ms. copy of Khulāṣat al-ḥisāb on the 'title page' (p.1).

[Khulāṣat al-ḥisāb] "Scribal," triangular, reads: "تمت الرسالة بعون الله الملك المنان سنة ۱۱۲۷ على يد الضعيف عمر بن احمد بن شاهين في سنة سبع وعشرين ومائة والف في ربيع الاخير في يوم الثلثاء في بلدة ارض روم في محلة المفتي" ; [Sharḥ Khulāṣat al-ḥisāb] "Scribal," triangular, reads: "تمت الرسالة الشريفة بعون الملك المعين العطية فيما بين الفجر والضحى في يوم الثلثاء من ايام اواخر جمادى الاخير على يد المذنب المحتاج الى ربه الغني عمر بن احمد بن شاهين غفر له ولوالديها في المدينة المسماة بالارزن الروم سنة ۱۱۲۷"

Written in 13 and 21 lines per page ; frame-ruled.


Naskh ; bold Turkish hand ; mainly serifless ; slight effect of tilt to the left ; mainly closed counters ; kāf mashkūlah (mashqūqah) preferred ; descenders mainly tapered ; final nūn occasionally reversed (or re-curved) ; opening quire (through p.20) in a very similar but larger hand with more open counters.


Keywords, section headings, abbreviations, and numerals rubricated ; written area (including ruled margins) through p.20 surrounded by red rule-border ; textual divders in red ; many geometric diagrams in red.


European laid paper with 11 laid lines per cm. (vertical), chain lines spaced 26 mm. apart (horizontal), three hats watermark ; tearing and staining.


Pasteboards covered in paper (once pink with floral pattern in gold, see envelope flap) with spine, fore-edge flap, and edges/turn-ins in brown leather ; Type II binding (with flap) ; board linings in laid paper ; sewn in cream thread, two stations, though sewing is very often missing ; overall in quite poor condition with significant losses of paper on upper and lower cover, significant abrasion, staining, lifting and losses of leather, delamination of boards, etc. ; repairs in assorted leathers.

As appears in colophon on p.64 and p.190, both works copied by ʻUmar ibn Aḥmad ibn Shāhīn in Erzurum. Transcription of first work finished Rabīʻ II 1127 [April-May 1715]. Transcription of second work finished final days of Jumādá II 1127 [July 1715].

Bookplate of British Museum, London on interior of upper cover, "British Museum, London. No. 78. Khulasat al-hisab." ; circular seal impression with figure of goat/gazelle in purple ink as well as inscription "366" in Western numerals on 'title page' (p.1) ; on blue-tinted paper pasted on ’title page’ (p.1), a detailed waqf statement in the name of al-Sayyid ʻAbd Allāh Adīb (Abdullah Edip), known as Jannatʹzādah (Cennet-zade), qāḍī of Erzurum, accompanied by his seal, reads: "وقفت وقفا صحيحا شرعيا على ان لا يخرج من بيت الكتب الملتصق بداري الا لعلماء سكنوا بارضروم بكفيل مرعى اورهن قوي وانا الفقير اليه عز شانه السيد عبد الله اديب الشهير بجنت زاده القاضي بمدينة ارضروم في سنة اثنى وستين ومائتين والف" ; numerous glosses and marginal corrections.
