Written in 11 lines per page ; frame-ruled.

Script:

Naskh ; clear Syrian or Egyptian (?) hand ; mainly sans serif but right-sloping head serifs appearing occasionally on lām, free-standing alif, etc. ; kāf mashkūlah preferred ; mostly closed counters ; interesting lām alif ligature where letters form a kind of loop ; text of p.69-70 supplied later in a different hand, also a naskh seemingly imitating the main hand ; glosses in at least three hands.

Decoration:

A few textual dividers in the form of inverted commas ; one page (p.48) ruled with red rule-border ; diagram in margin of p.84 ; text rubricated with chapter headings, section breaks "فصل", sigla, textual dividers, etc. in red.

Support:

European and non-European (Arab) laid paper ; early quires in European paper with bow and arrow watermark (see p.62, 64, etc. corresponding with Inventory J 340, Piccard watermark collection No. 123436), laid lines spaced roughly 7 laid lines per cm. and chain lines (vertical) roughly 38 mm. apart ; others in European paper having tower with three merlons watermark (see p.71, 74, etc. very similar to Inventory J 340, Piccard watermark collection, No. 100313 but earlier production thereof), laid lines spaced roughly 8-9 laid lines per cm. and chain lines (vertical) difficult to see but spaced roughly 35-40 mm. apart ; non-European (Arab) laid paper for the mid to latter quires, with some arrangement of groups of threes and twos or groups of three (see p.158), roughly 11 mm. between the chains and roughly 43 mm. between the groups ; some pages breaking along chain lines (stabilized by previous conservator with laid paper, cream colored, water-soluble adhesive ; current conservation with Japanese paper and sodium CMC) ; iron gall ink of main text with minor flaking and some ink burn on some pages.

Binding:

Pasteboards originally covered in brown leather, seen on fore-edge, spine, and turn-ins with paper impressed on the tooled leather (see upper and lower covers as well as envelope flap) ; Type II binding (with flap) ; original leather blind-tooled, with florets and horizontal bars ; repairs/secondary binding in leather seen on spine and turn-ins ; sewn in cream thread, four sewing stations ; endbands in mustard and light green ; in poor condition with red rot and abrasion on all corners, head of fore-edge flap missing, and pasteboards delaminating ; vertical crack down front board, old repair with strip of laid paper.

Accompanying Materials:

Two inserted slips, both included in pagination, one folded piece containing calligraphy practice in black ink (p.10), the other a folded blank insert (pp.87-88) ; between pp.82-83, (not paginated) a slip with text in black ink, piece of marginalia from top left of p.175.

Al-Mukhtar li 'l-fatwa." ; circular seal impression with figure of goat/gazelle in purple ink as well as inscription "182" in Western numerals on front flyleaf verso ; on paper (tinted) pasted on fol.1a (p.3), a detailed waqf statement in the name of al-Sayyid ʻAbd Allāh Adīb (Abdullah Edip), known as Jannatʹzādah (Cennet-zade), qāḍī of Erzurum, accompanied by his seal, reads: "وقفت وقفا صحيحا شرعيا بشرط ان لا يخرج من بيت الكتب الملتصق بداري الا لعلماء سكنوا بارضروم بكفيل مرعى اورهن قوي وانا الفقير السيد عبد الله اديب الشهير بجنت زاده في سنة اثنى وستين ومائتين والف" ; numerous marginal corrections and interlinear corrections throughout ; grammatical explanation in black ink on interior of upper cover ; marginal glosses in black ink throughout ; additional matter such as fatāwa statements on front and back flyleaves.
