Fine copy of the abridgement of Ibn Qayyim al-Jawzīyah's Hādī al-arwāḥ ilá bilād al-afrāḥ, a description of the inhabitants of Paradise, supplied by his student, Shihāb al-Dīn Abū al-ʻAbbās Aḥmad ibn al-Ḥusayn al-Shāfiʻī, via removal of the isnāds (asānīd). Followed by a treatment for qūbah (skin eruptions or ringworm).

Naskh ; clear Syrian [?] hand ; virtually serifless ; both lām alif warrāqīyah and lām alif mukhaffafah mursalah used ; descenders mainly tapered and rectilinear ; closed and open counters ; compact in the vertical, with some elongation in the horizontal ; pointing in distinct dots ; even alif maqṣūrah pointed as yāʼ ; occasionally vocalized.
Decoration:
Section headings, keywords and abbreviation symbols rubricated ; occasional textual dividers in the form of three dots in red.
Support:
European laid paper with 8 laid lines per cm. (vertical) ; chain lines spaced roughly 30 mm. apart (horizontal) ; anchor in circle watermark ; quite thick and sturdy ; well-burnished.
Binding:
Pasteboards covered in laid paper with dark brown leather over spine, foreedge flap, and edges/turn-ins ; Type II binding (with flap) ; sewn in red thread, two stations ; worked endbands in red and green, poor condition ; overall in poor condition with significant abrasion, losses and lifting of paper and leather, upper and lower covers detaching at spine, delamination of boards, moisture damage, etc.
Ownership and History:
Bookplate of British Museum, London on upper cover, "British Museum, London. No. 19. Al-Dai ila ashraf al-masai." ; circular seal impression with figure of goat/gazelle in purple ink as well as inscription "599" [?] in Western numerals on 'title page' (p.1) ; former owner's mark appears on 'title page' (p.1) and verso of final leaf (p.152) ; occasional marginal corrections.
