UM Library Instruction

Customized Library Instruction for your Courses

Why library instruction?

With the amount of information available online through a variety of sources, students need to be able to:

  • Effectively find materials from authoritative sources
  • Evaluate information they find both on the web and in academic resources
  • Change and adjust focus in their writing based on what information is available
  • Think beyond Google, Wikipedia, and even online databases when it comes to finding information
  • Effectively use information in writing and research
  • The University Library can bring instruction directly to your students so they can become more familiar with, and more skilled at finding the information they need. A customizable group of instruction modules are available for your class. This menu can help you decide which topics you want addressed in the class time that is available. The Popular Combinations will show you some common combinations. If you would like topics covered other than the ones listed, we'd be happy to discuss the options with you. The times listed are the minimum needed to cover a topic. If you would like a more interactive, hands-on session for your students this will take more time. Also we've found that scheduling the library session as close as possible to the time when your students are actually beginning work on a research project is most effective. To set up a library session use the online form below or contact an individual subject specialist:

    Instruction Request Form

We ask that you request a session at least one week in advance; you will receive a confirmation usually within 24 hours of its receipt.

    Don't have time?
We also have an online tutorial called Searchpath. Students can choose individual modules, such as "Find Books," and learn about library resources at their own pace. There are quizzes at the end of the modules that some instructors use to determine whether their students grasped the concepts. Access SearchPath.
