General Science Reference

Composite Index for CRC Handbooks

  • Located in Reference Q 199 .C52 at Taubman Medical, Shapiro Science and Art Architecture and Engineering (formerly the Media Union) Libraries.
Also available on CD-ROM at Shapiro Science Library.
  • A combined index for finding information in any of the 317 technical handbooks published by CRC Press. The composite index will indicate which handbook has the information; you can then search the Mirlyn Library Catalog for the location of that specific handbook. Indexing is by topic/keyword, chemical name and organism name.

Encyclopedia of Life Sciences
Provides over 3000 peer-reviewed articles, images, a glossary of terms, news, and some multimedia files on a wide variety of life sciences topics. Released in 2001 by the Nature Publishing Group. Updated on an ongoing basis. NOTE: Access is limited to the UM network (on-campus & dial-in).

E-PRINT Network
Directory of hundreds of e-prints servers on the web. Covers e-prints in the areas of physics, materials, chemistry, mathematics, biology, environmental sciences, etc. Use "Browse by Discipline" to identify individual e-print servers, or "Search" across multiple e-print servers simultaneously. "Receive E-print Alerts" may be set up for email notification of new information. “Find Scientific Societies” leads to the websites of more than 2,000 scientific societies and professional associations. Developed by the US Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Scientific and Technical Information (OSTI).

Online Encyclopedia of Science & Technology (AccessScience)
Full text of the McGraw-Hill Encyclopedia of Science & Technology, the McGraw-Hill Dictionary of Scientific & Technical Terms, and "research updates", a version of the Yearbooks of Science & Technology from 1998 to the present. Also has biographies of scientists, lists of Nobel Prize winners and Fields Medal (mathematics) winners, and weekly updates of science and technology news items.

Journal Literature Indexes

Cambridge Scientific Abstracts
Basic, biomedical and material sciences literature, including biotechnology, microbiology, animal behavior, biology, aquatic sciences, bioengineering, neurosciences, ecology, entomology, genetics, immunology, plant sciences, toxicology, virology, polymers, metallurgy, ceramics and composites. Primarily citations and abstracts to journal literature; 48 separate databases. Includes a conference papers database (1982-present). Multiple databases may be selected for simultaneous searching by going to the alphabetical list of databases. Most databases include coverage from the mid-1980's to the present and are updated monthly.

Current Contents (via Web of Knowledge)
Tables of contents and citations for current issues of over 7500 scholarly journals and 2,000 books and conference proceedings in Agriculture, Biology & Environmental Sciences; Arts & Humanities; Social & Behavioral Sciences; Clinical Medicine; Life Sciences; Physical, Chemical & Earth Sciences; Engineering, Computing, & Technology. Most records include abstracts. Covers only the most recent 52-weeks, updated weekly.

PubMed with MGet It journal links
Citations to MEDLINE journals as well as additional life science journals. In-process (PreMEDLINE) and publisher supplied citations supply additional references. Most records include abstracts. Also provides access and links to the integrated molecular biology databases included in the U.S. National Center for Biotechnology Information's Entrez retrieval system. These databases contain DNA and protein sequences, 3-D protein structure data, population study data sets, and assemblies of complete genomes in an integrated system. Includes citations from the late 1950's to the present.

Web of Knowledge (Science Citation Index)
Index to the journal literature in 164 scientific disciplines including biomedicine, biotechnology, and basic sciences. Includes citations, abstracts, and cited references. Also allows you to search for articles which cite an author or article that you specify. Includes cited literature from 1945-present, updated weekly. Produced by the Institute for Scientific Information.

Web Search Engines

science.gov
A gateway to authoritative selected science information provided by U.S. Government agencies including research and development results.

SCIRUS
search engine for science, focuses only on Web pages containing scientific content

Laboratory Manuals

Current Protocols Online
Provides laboratory methods in cell biology, molecular biology, cytometry, human genetics, immunology, analytical chemistry, neuroscience, protein science, toxicology and pharmacology.

Technical & Research Report

DOE Information Bridge
Provides access to Full text and bibliographic records from 1995 forward of Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Scientific and Technical Information (OSTI) research and development reports in physics, chemistry, materials, biology, environmental sciences, energy technologies, engineering, computer and information science, renewable energy, and other topics. Includes many papers presented at conferences.

Federal R&D Project Summaries
Descriptions, awards and summaries of federally funded research. Simultaneously searches the Department of Energy R&D Project Summaries Database, the NIH CRISP Database, and the National Science Foundation Awards Database.

GrayLIT Network
A portal for technical report information generated through federally funded research and development projects, which is not available through traditional indexing systems and publication outlets.

National Technical Information Service (NTIS) Catalog (via Cambridge Scientific Abstracts)
Citations and abstracts of reports on government sponsored R&D from selected federal agencies, their contractors, and their grantees, from 1983 to the present. Covers such topics as engineering, biotechnology, computers, the environment, health and safety, business, as well as the physical, biological and social sciences.
