Term Appointments

revised 4/97

POLICY

Most Library appointments are made on a "regular" or continuing basis using general funds. However, in certain specific cases, appointments are made on a term basis. Most often, the decision to appoint individuals on a term basis is due to the funding nature of the position. Term appointments are generally externally funded from grant accounts. As such, term appointments are considered temporary in nature with a specific ending date appropriately noted at the onset of the appointment.

In all cases, the temporary nature of the term appointment and its ending date will be noted in all advertisements, posting descriptions and correspondence relating to the position. The term appointment will last for the specified period of time assuming satisfactory conduct and performance is maintained and external funding continues as initially expected.

Term appointments may be extended if additional funding is secured, or may be ended prior to the established end date if funding is discontinued. When extending appointments, the length of the extension will be clearly specified.

While employed by the University Library, individuals on term appointments will be subject to the same personnel policies as apply to regular staff such as staff benefits, performance evaluation, and merit increases. However, there are the following differences:

1. All such appointments will be considered terminal upon the completion of the terms and conditions of the appointment assuming satisfactory conduct and performance is maintained and external funding continues as initially expected.

2. Neither the University's Reduction-in-Force (SPG 201.72), the Library's Reduction-in-Force policy, nor the Library's policy on Probationary Period for Librarians will apply to Librarians with term appointments.

Individuals who wish to continue working in the Library are strongly encouraged to apply for open positions.
