Recommendation Summary
Library Ergonomics Task Force Report
RECOMMENDATION SUMMARY
1. Create and maintain an ergonomic awareness in all staff:
The Library should create in all staff an awareness of the generic or "best" positioning of body and workstation equipment, as well as an awareness of personal or individual needs. The awareness program should prevent new problems and lead to a resolution of existing problems. We recommend the creation of a short workshop on proper workstation position and behavior which would be given at least once a year and available to all staff. A resource file of information on ergonomic equipment and contacts should be created and maintained in Human Resources. As workstation areas are re-modelled or re-arranged, principles of ergonomics should be used to define space needs, equipment choices, and positioning of equipment.
2. Ensure that new workstation equipment is ergonomically appropriate for the use and personnel intended:
There is a range of chairs and adaptive equipment now available that provides a good ergonomic work environment for individuals. In the following sections, we will describe this equipment. All new furniture equipment requests should be evaluated for ergonomic function and suitability for the individuals and use intended, preferably within the unit; placement of the equipment at the site should also be evaluated. All older equipment should be evaluated and replaced as needed. This should be a priority, to avoid additional problems.
3. Investigate existing ergonomic problems immediately and try to resolve them appropriately:
Individuals already experiencing problems should have their workstations evaluated and adapted to meet their needs. All new staff should be made aware of adaptive equipment and be prompted to identify the workstation best suited to their personal needs. All staff should be aware of what assistance is available. The awareness program should help both supervisor and individual resolve and prevent problems.
