FIRST YEAR
Fall term
* Training on basic reference skills (15 separate units in engineering, art,
and architecture) prepares ULA for work at the reference desk
* Public service at the reserve/circulation desk (first 3 weeks at 6-8 hours/week)
provides grounding in basic services provided by (almost all) libraries
* Public service on reference desk (last 13 weeks at 8-10 hours/week)
* Small projects and day-to-day work related to various library services
Winter term
* Public service on reference desk, now including digital (chat) reference too!
(8-10 hours/week)
* Larger projects and day-to-day work
Spring & Summer terms
* Public service on reference desk & chat (6-8 hours/week)
* Projects and day-to-day work as the class load lightens somewhat) and the
comfort level at work increases (somewhat), the ULA gets involved with larger
projects with more responsibility
SECOND YEAR
Fall term
* Public service on reference desk & chat (8-10 hours/week)
* Projects and day-to-day work
* Collection development and book selection gives ULAs budget responsibility
and rounds out their involvement in what a professional does.
* Potential work at other locations in the University Library system to provide
learning opportunities not provided in great depth at AAEL (e.g. instruction,
cataloging, preservation).
Winter term
* Public service on reference desk & chat (8-10 hours/week)
* Projects and day-to-day work
* Collection development and book selection
* Potential work at other locations in the University Library system to provide
learning opportunities not provided in great depth at AAEL (e.g. instruction,
cataloging, preservation).
* Starting thinking about getting a job!
Spring term
* Public service on reference desk & chat (4-6 hours/week)
* Projects and day-to-day work
* Collection development and book selection
* Work on getting a job
Summer term
* Public service on reference desk & chat (4-6 hours/week)
* Collection development and book selection
* Hand-off of projects and "work that's gotta get done by somebody"
* Getting a job

Example Day-to-day work
* Document ordering

* Training new staff
Selection Criteria
* An interest in learning about architecture, art, visual resources, engineering,
or urban planning librarianship.
* Background in any of the above would be great, but is not essential.
* Familiarity and comfort with information technology
