This University Library Associate position in the Graduate Library is designed to provide experience and professional growth in the provision of technology instruction and reference services in the research library context.

The Harlan Hatcher Graduate Library is the University of Michigan's primary research collection for the humanities and social sciences. The Graduate Library collection numbers approximately 2.5 million volumes including 10,000 journals and periodical subscriptions written in several hundred languages and covering a broad array of subject specialties. The collections and subject specialists support scholarship campus wide.

The Knowledge Navigation Center (KNC) provides assistance and instruction to faculty, staff, and students with a variety of technical backgrounds in the use of digital cameras, digital imaging, HTML, Adobe Photoshop, OCR text scanning, EndNote, ProCite, Power Point and other technology tools. KNC staff have a unique opportunity to gain further insight into human needs regarding technology, and provide instruction in using multimedia. The ULA will report directly to the Manager of the Knowledge Navigation Center, working also with the direction and support of the Coordinator of the Information Center. The first year will concentrate on developing core public service skills instruction practice in the research environment. The experience is structured to be developmental over the two year tenure, with assignments increasing in responsibility and independence each semester.

Technology Consultant, Knowledge Navigation Center (60%)

• Develop and/or enhance competencies in KNC core services: navigation of the UM computing environment; knowledge of Macintosh and Windows operating systems; web site design and implementation; image scanning and graphics tools (e.g. Photoshop); text scanning and OCR software; bibliographic management software (e.g. ProCite and Endnote); CD-writing technologies.
• Provide direct assistance to faculty, staff, and students in the exploration and utilization of information technology 10-12 hours per week. (This may include some weekend or evening hours each week)
• Participate in the development and delivery of programs offered by KNC staff and collaborative programs with other campus units.
• Participate in staff meetings and training events.

Web Design and Development (20-25%)

• Maintain and develop the KNC web site, including exploring and implementing new technologies relative to the KNC web presence.

• Provide direct patron assistance at the Harlan Hatcher Graduate Library Reference and Information Center 4 hours/week. (This may include some weekend and evening hours each week. )
• Participate in bi-weekly departmental meetings.

• Strong commitment to public services.
• Public service or teaching experience and/or training. Knowledge of HTML authoring.
• Basic knowledge of digital imaging and Adobe Photoshop.
• Desire to assist patrons at a variety of technological levels with design and experimentation.
• Excellent ability to communicate in speaking and writing.
• Enthusiasm and demonstrated ability to work effectively with colleagues and a wide range of people in a demanding, technologically rich, and fast-paced environment.
