Installing Terminal Services for Windows 2000, NT, ME, 98

  1. Download the Remote Desktop Connection Software from Microsoft.

  2. Click on the "msrdpcli.exe" link and, when prompted, save the file to your computer.

  3. When the file has been downloaded to your computer, double click on the "msrdpcli" icon to activate the Installation Wizard. Follow the directions given by the Wizard.

  4. If you're using Internet Explorer, you're ready to connect to the Terminal Services resources. If you're using Netscape, Mozilla, or another browser, you'll need to configure these to recognize Terminal Services files. In Netscape and Mozilla, go to the Edit menu, and select Preferences. Under Navigator, select Helper Applications. Select New Type and enter the following:

    • Description: Terminal Services
    • File Extension: .rdp
    • Mime Type: application/rdp
    • Application to use: navigate to c:\windows (or c:\winnt depending on the installation) then to system32 then find the file called "mstsc.exe".

  5. Go to the Terminal Services database that you would like to access. A list of databases offered is available here.
  6. Click on the resource in the list that you would like to use.  On the next page click on the link that says "Use [resource that you want to use]."  A dialogue box will appear asking you to either open or save the file. Click open.

  7. When running terminal services, a message may appear stating that your computer will be accessible to the remote server ts.lib.umich.edu. In order to access the resource, you will need to allow the server to access your computer. This is a secure server maintained by the University Library.

  8. Enter your uniquename and kerkeros password into the authentication box.  Be sure the umich.edu kerberos realm is selected. Unfortunately, at this time we are unable to offer these resources to patrons on a "guest" status, so only UM students, staff, and faculty can access these resources.

  9. You can now search within the resource. When you are finished searching, delete the .rdp file.

  10. Problems or questions? Ask a Librarian! Please include the version of the operating system (Windows 98, ME, NT, 2000, XP; Macintosh OSX, etc.) you are using and the UM Library Terminal Services resources you tried to use (Scifinder Scholar, SAE Handbook, etc.)
