Carrel and Locker Policy

Assigned Carrels

The Hatcher Graduate Library has 132 locked carrels located on floors 3, 4, 5 and 6 of the South building, which are assigned to University of Michigan doctoral candidates or faculty members who are actively engaged in writing a dissertation or a work for publication.

Since the demand for space far exceeds the number available, assigned carrels must be shared by three people. Assignments are made for morning (8:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m.), afternoon (1:00-6:00 p.m.), or evening (6:00 p.m.-closing) time periods. Any assignee may use the carrel during another's time period if that individual is not present. However, they should expect to move if the person assigned to that time wishes to use the carrel.

Each carrel has three shelves, one for each person. In consideration of the other occupants assignees are expected to keep the carrel neat and orderly and should not use more than the one shelf. Should more space be required a locker should be requested.

Carrels are checked on a regular basis and uncharged library items are removed and returned to the shelves.

Smoking and consumption of food and beverages is strictly prohibited. The windows of the carrel door should not be covered at any time. Assignees are also cautioned against the danger of theft. Personal items should never be left unattended in a carrel. Lockers are available for storage of personal belongings.

Security and maintenance problems should be reported immediately to Circulation Services, Room 104, North Building.

Lockers

Coin-operated lockers ($.25) are available on floors 3, 4, 5, and 6 of the South Building for short-term storage needs. In addition, reserved lockers are located on stack levels 3 and 6 in the South Building. Anyone affiliated with U-M is eligible to reserve a locker by the term. Personal items and library materials that have been charged out may be kept in a locker. Lockers are checked on a regular basis and uncharged items are removed and returned to the shelves.

Keys

Locker and carrel assignments are processed at Circulation Services, Room 104, North Building, and a $10.00 deposit per key is required. Carrel keys are distributed at Circulation Services; locker assignees are given Key Request forms which must be taken to the University Key Office where keys are made. Carrel and locker keys are not transferrable; an infraction of this rule could lead to the withdrawal of carrel privileges. Individuals must return carrel keys to Circulation Services or locker keys to the Key Office when assignments are finished. The Library cannot be held responsible for keys still in the possession of previous carrel/locker occupants.

Carrel and Locker Renewal

Toward the end of the Fall and Winter terms all carrel and locker assignees will be notified via email that it is time to renew their assignments. The email address provided on the most recent Locker/Carrel Application form will be used. The renewal form must be completed and returned to Hatcher Graduate Library Circulation Services by the indicated deadline. If the renewal is not received in time the assignment will be cancelled and the locker/carrel reassigned.

When lockers/carrels are not renewed and personal materials are found, Hatcher Graduate Library Circulation Services will remove and hold them while attempting to contact the individual. If the individual cannot be located or fails to respond to notification for any reason the materials will be discarded in 3 weeks.

Carrel and Locker Cancellation

Because of the great demand for carrel and locker space, assignees are urged to notify Hatcher Graduate Library Circulation Services when the carrel/locker is being vacated. Carrel keys must be returned to Circulation Services and locker keys must be returned to the Key Office immediately in order to obtain the refund of the $10.00 deposit.

Open Carrels and Study Space

Stacks level 3-6 in the South building and open study space in the North building stacks are available to graduate and undergraduate students on a first-come, first served basis. Personal belongings-books, papers, notebooks, pens-should not be left for any extended period at study desks. The Library assumes no responsibility for stolen articles, and thefts have been reported.
