This is intended to be an identification guide to non-current committees whose publications are likely to be in our collection. The list was created to assist shelf space planning by identifying sections of Congressional publications for which open shelf space for future growth need not be made. The list was compiled using shelf list cards in the U. of Texas at Arlington Library Government Documents shelf list, and two GPO publications: List of Classes of United States Government Publications available for selection by depository libraries. 2001/1 edition; and Inactive or discontinued items from the 1950 Revision of the classified list. GPO publications and two books can be used for updating and revising this list. , Congressional Committees, 1789-1982: A Checklist, compiled by Walter Stubbs, (Westport, Connecticut: Greenwood Press, 1985) contains information about the establishment and termination dates of committees, the Superintendent of Documents classification number stem when applicable, and related information when appropriate. The Guide to U.S. Government Publications (annual, now published by Gale Group) contains entries for every federal governmental unit assigned a classification number stem, and has an "Agency Class Chronology" section.
