About RSS Feeds

Last updated January 25, 2008

The University of Michigan Documents Center RSS feed is: http://www.lib.umich.edu/govdocs/rss.xml. This will appear as XML markup language if you view it through a regular web browser. It is best viewed through a content notification service.

The purpose of the Documents Center's news feed is to present both new site content and answers to commonly-asked reference questions about all levels of government as those questions occur. Catherine Morse and Grace York are managing editors.

RSS feeds allow a user to be notified of news or new content on a web site without having to visit that site specifically. An individual can use a content notification service where he or she can sign up for feeds from web sites, blogs, and other news sources. Users will be automatically notified which subscriptions have new content.

A good content notification service is Bloglines (http://www.bloglines.com/). It's free and allows for searching, subscribing, publishing, and sharing of web content. When accessing it for the first time, register your e-mail address and choose a password. When Bloglines sends an e-mail reply, click on the link to activate your account. Then choose My Feeds and Add. When you type in the URL of a new RSS feed, a preview will appear in the righthand box. If you decide to subscribe, you MUST click on the SUBSCRIBE button at the bottom of the preview. Note that news items are available on Bloglines the day after they are posted.

Sincere thanks to Michael Samson, Wayne State University Law Library; Kincaid Brown, University of Michigan Law Library; and Bill Dueber of University Library Web Services for their assistance in implementing the RSS feed.
