How to Borrow Reserve Items

A quick summary of what to do!
  1. Look up the reserve item(s) you need in the correct notebook : D1-D2, D3-D4, Hygiene, Manuals.
  2. Write down the call number of the item on scrap paper and give it to the Desk staff.
  3. You can check out four items at once, maximum, usually for two hours.
  4. After using the reserve items return them intact and in order to the return slot.
  5. Things to remember: it's first come first serve. There is no wait list, reserve materials can be renewed one time and fines are taken care of by supervisor only.

    Reserves

  1. Where do I find the listing for the item(s) I want?

There are four notebooks with listings; D1-D2, D3-D4, and Hygiene notebooks list all classes that currently have items on reserve. The classes are listed by course title abbreviation alphabetically and then by course number numerically from low to high. So BDEN 505 is listed after BDEN 502, CDEN is before ORTH, etc. Another notebook lists all manuals currently available and study materials for Dental Board Examination.

  2. My class isn't listed, but my professor SWORE s/he put something on reserve. Do you keep reserves anywhere else?

No, what you see is what we have (and what you get). If it's not on reserve then we don't have it yet. If it's the beginning of a term there is a chance that we are swamped with new reserves and have not gotten to your class. (We check them in just like we check them out: first come, first served). Ask at the Circ desk, but if it's not there then we don't have it.

    Call Numbers

  1. OK, I've found my class. Now what?

When you find your class, scan down the list for the item you need. Then just write what you see under the heading "call number" on a scrap piece of paper and give it to the staff at the desk.

  2. My class is there but the item I wanted isn't listed.

Then we never received it or your professor did not place it on reserve. Some suggestions:

    1. If it's a manual or past board exam you might want to check the Manual Notebook.
    2. If it's a book check on MIRLYN for the call number and location.
    3. Ask your professor.

  3. Why are some things listed that are not yet on reserve?

We list all the items that are supposed to be on reserve for the class, but occasionally the book has been checked out prior to being put on reserve, so we are waiting for it to be returned; or we don't own a copy of the book but have placed an order for it.

    Check Out

  1. How many reserve items can I check out at once?

Four. You don't have enough time to look at more anyway.

  2. For how long?

For two hours. Occasionally items can go out for 24 hrs, but only if the course instructor has specifically asked for this. Usually this will be listed in the folder.

  3. Is there any way I can check out an item for more than 2 hours?

If you check out (or renew) an item two hours before closing they are due back one hour after opening the next day.

  4. I forgot my I.D. Is there a way to check things out?

Leave your driver's license at the desk.

    Use & Return

  1. I want to make copies of this reserve item. Can I have change?

The change we have is reserved for patrons paying overdue fines, and we don't have much as it is. We will make change for you only if we have enough change available. You can buy a vendacard if you have dollar bills.

  2. Where do I return the items when I'm done?

There is a return slot on the top of the Circulation desk that says "Book Return."

  3. I'm returning the item late. Will I be fined?

Yes, it's $1 every hour or part of an hour that it is late. If you are 1 hour late it's $1. At 1 hour 1 minute it's $2. At 2 hours 1 minute it's $3 . . . .and on and on. Fines will accumulate even when the library is closed. It's a good idea to return reserve items on time.

    Things to Remember

  1. If a reserve item is checked out, can I get on a wait list?

Due to the frequency of reserve items being checked out, we do not have a wait list. It's first come, first serve. If you can find the person who checked it out, ask if you can borrow it to make copies (but see the next question).

  2. Can you tell me who checked it out?

By law we cannot disclose this information. The library staffer can tell you only when the item is due.

  3. Can I renew a reserve item?

    Yes, once.

  4. I know I returned the item on time, but I received a late charge in the mail. What gives?

We check the return box regularly. However, occasionally the computer doesn't read the bar code right or the item was returned with only a minute to spare. There is a grace period of a few minutes to ensure this won't happen very often. If you believe the library is at fault, please ask to talk to a supervisor (weekdays from 8am-4:30pm) and he will help sort things out.
