How to Find Product Information
- Search Medline for - product name search as "_____".mp. - company name,
if known.
- Search PubMed (because it includes new articles which have not yet been
cataloged for full MEDLINE.
PubMed: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/PubMed/.
- Try searching the Internet for the company's website. The best search engine
to use for this will be either FAST or Google, because they have the largest database
and are most likely to have something which is new.
Google: http://www.google.com/
Yahoo: http://www.yahoo.com/
FAST/AllTheWeb: http://www.alltheweb.com/
If the company's website is found, try clicking on CATALOG or PRODUCTS. You
can also try searching by product name, which is sometimes successful.
- Try variant spellings of both the product name and company name if you still are not finding what you need.
- Try searching the product name with the acronym MSDS to find the Material Safety Data Sheets for the product.
- Look up the product name in the current issue of REALITY, shelved in Course Reserves at the Circulation Desk (Call Number RK 1 .R25).
- Check in issues of Dental Advisor or Clinical Research Associates Newsletter (also known as CRA News). These are shelved by title in the journals. These journals are not indexed in Medline, nor in Google, so you must browse the issues on the shelf.
- To find product identification numbers (PIDs), failures of a product, or censures against the company or a product, search the FDA site or databases. These can be found at:
- When all else fails, phone the company, almost always a source of information for their own products. Note that companies are often more accomodating with information over the phone than by e-mail.
