• Dental History
  This is fairly substantive collection of excerpts from Gale Research publications. Sections are available on the Dental Drill, Dental Filling, False Teeth, Fluoride Treatment, and so on through Toothpaste and Orthodontics.
• Dental History
  This site from the Adler Museum in South Africa is a good general overview of dental history, beginning with ancient history and continuing through this century.
• Highlights in the History of U.S. Army Dentistry
  Unique collection of little known tidbits about military dentistry in the USA.

Health Sciences History Reference Tools & Resources

• Archaic Medical Terms for Genealogists
  While not specifically dental, this resources defines a great many of what we often consider the quaint and exotic terms used in documents of historical interest.
• Conservation of Scientific and Medical Antiques
  Another good starting resource from Thomas Jones.
• Historical Images in Medicine
  Images from the collections of the Duke University Medical Center Library. In addition to the image collection, they have related historical exhibits, such as their recent "Black History Month: A Medical Perspective."
• The History of Medicine Division of the National Library of Medicine.
  A great many resources are available here, with a diversity of exhibits and a large searchable database of historical images from their collections. The image database includes over 300 images in dentistry.
• The History of the Health Sciences in Michigan: A Guide to Research Sources
  From Anne J. Gilliland-Swetland of the Museum of the University of Michigan's Historical Center for the Health Sciences. Includes a substantial section directing users to original resources available for the study of dental history in Michigan.
• Medical History on the Internet
  By A.J. Wright, Anesthesiology Librarian at the University of Alabama, Birmingham. A great starting point for general medical history.

People

• Dentist on a Camel.
  Written by his son, this is the story of H.V. Mattingly, a turn-of-the-century dentist in the gold fields of Western Australia.
• Leaders in Dentistry
  Brief biographies of over 40 key figures in dentistry of this century.
• Early Diversity in the Health Sciences at the University of Michigan
  By Nicholas H. Steneck as an article in Retrospectives, with photos from the Bentley Historical Library, UM Medical School, and UM School of Dentistry. Includes a discussion of Ida Gray, the first African-American woman DDS in the US. Bibliography included.

Instruments & Microscopes

• Antique Medical
  By Michael Echols, DDS, this site includes images, a bibliography, and brief essays on topics of interest.
• History of the Light Microscope
  A section within the larger Scientific and Medical Antiques by Thomas H. Jones.
• Medical & Dental Antiques
  Michael & Roberta Gordon, dealers in rare dental instruments, have made available on their site a number of images and some informative discussions.
• Microscope Gallery
  From the Museum of the University of Michigan's Historical Center for the Health Sciences. Note they also provide a catalog of the historical artifacts in their collection.
• Online Microscopes
  From the Moody Medical Library of the University of Texas, Galveston, comes this well developed introduction to the history of microscopes. Generously illustrated with photographs of microscopes in their collection. You may note that this is from the same people who offer the Online Portrait Gallery.
