W.D. (Willoughby Dayton) Miller

Dr. Miller was hired to be the second Dean of the University of Michigan School of Dentistry shortly before his death. An alumni of the University, he had moved his family and belongings back to Michigan from their home in Germany, and took the opportunity to visit with his family before formally assuming his duties. The following snippet is from a brief biography that includes quotes from his widow and is considered to be the most authoritative description of his death.

"While with relatives in Alexandria symptoms of appendicitis developed. On July 22 an operation was performed at the City Hospital, Newark, Ohio. The condition was found to be serious, as gangrene had set i[n]. Death occurred Sunday, July 28, 1907. His funeral took place at his birthplace, Alexandria, Ohio, and his remains were interred in the cemetery there."

Miller's Personal Library Online

Each of the volumes listed below contains pamphlets and articles collected by Dr. Miller which were then bound together for ease of personal use. Inside the front cover of most volumes is a hand-written index of what is contained in that specific volume. It is believed that the handwriting is probably that of Dr. Miller's wife. The collection is in roughly chronological order. At this time, the collection is only accessible by browsing, and cannot be searched. The items included are in a variety of sizes, shapes, languages, and scripts, which presents special problems in creating a search interface. Still, we are delighted to make available this historically significant collection.
