EVENING REFERENCE SERVICE BEGINS

The Dentistry Library is beginning reference hours, focusing
specifically on the early evening hours when clinics have
closed and schedules are a little more open. This service
is an experiment to see if there is justification for a
more permanent service or more extended reference hours.
We will also be exploring alternative modes for providing
reference support, trying to find the best way to meet
your needs for information and information problem solving.

Official reference desk hours will start as:

  Monday: 4pm-7pm
  Wednesday: 4pm-7pm
  Friday: 3pm-5pm

Stop by and see what we can do for you! Let us know what you think.

ANNOUNCING "NEW" RARE BOOKS

The Dentistry Library is proud to announce the gift of several
special titles from the history of dentistry. These titles were
the gift of the School of Dentistry, which makes them especially
precious, even if they had not already been on the Library's
wish list of "wanted titles" for many years.

Fabricius, ab Aquapendente, ca. 1533-1619
Hieronymi Fabricii ab Aquapendente ... Opera omnia anatomica
et physiologica ... / Lugduni Batavorum : Apud Johannem van
  Kerckhem, 1738.
QM 21 .F12 1738
A classic early work on anatomy and physiology, including
the head and neck, but encompassing the entire body.

orbe praeclarissimi. Anatomes & chirurgiae in celeberrimo

RD 30 .F132 1723
This book includes a detailed section on early dental surgery,
with an unusual early illustration of dental "armor".

Kirmisson, E. (Edouard), 1848-1927.
Traite des maladies chirurgicales d'origine congenitale / Paris :
  Masson ..., 1898.

DICTIONARIES ONLINE

There are quite a variety of dictionaries on the web now, all of
which are easy to use, and most of which are searchable or browsable.
This makes it rather straightforward to check the meaning or spelling
of a term. Here are a few.

  General
    Oxford English Dictionary (UM only)
     http://www.hti.umich.edu/dict/oed/
Dictionaries.com (when you're away from home)
      http://www.dictionaries.com

  Medical
AMA Health Insight: General Health: Medical Glossary
      http://www.ama-assn.org/insight/gen_hlth/glossary/index.htm

  Dental
    AAO Orthodontic Glossary:
      http://www.aaortho.org/glossary/search.html
    Dental Terminology (General Terms)
      http://www.pe.net/~iddpc1/denterm1.htm

Many more dictionaries are available at the University Libraries'
General Reference Resources web page:

ELECTRONIC JOURNALS HIGHLIGHTED

Academic Medicine: Journal of the AAMC
  http://www.aamc.org/findinfo/aamcpubs/acadmed/start.htm

  British Dental Journal
  http://www.bdj.co.uk/

  Molecular cell
  http://www.molecule.org/

  Science Direct
The PEAK service, which provides electronic journals by the publisher
Elsevier, is being replaced by this new service. More information
will be available as the service becomes more established. The best
mode of access to these electronic journals remains by first checking
the University Library System's alphabetical list of electronic
journals, which can be found at:

So, if we are still prescribing antibiotics rather than roots,
where can we get quick and easy information about these medications?
I have two definate favorites for finding information about
prescription drugs:

  RXlist: http://www.rxlist.com/
Available free, similar to the PDR. Includes special services
as well, such as a special collection on alternative and herbal
medications and their interactions with some commonly prescribed
drugs, or another favorite, the top 200 prescribed drugs of 1999,
   1998, 1997, ...

  MicroMedex: http://s-ummc-web8.mcit.med.umich.edu/mdxdocs/mdxhome.html
Includes information from a variety of professional drug information
sources. Most useful tool is probably the drug interaction finder,
which allows you to build a profile of a given patient's prescriptions
and find all potential interactions. Highly recommended.

However, there are other issues as well to consider in exploring
drug information on the Internet. The commercial aspect of selling
prescription drugs and information about them is a serious concern.
You may want to check the following two brief articles for highlights
of these issues.

IOM REPORTS ONLINE

This isn't new, but I find many people are unaware of this service
from the Institute of Medicine. They have made all their published
reports also available in fulltext on the Web through the National
Academy of Presses, which also provides many (but not all) publications
from several university presses. To test out this service, go the the
following URL:

http://www4.nas.edu/IOM/IOMHome.nsf/Pages/Recently+Released+Reports

select the title you wish to examine, then click on "Open Book -
Read - Searchable". Some examples of interesting titles available
here include:

Assuring Data Quality and Validity in Clinical Trials for Regulatory
  Decision Making: Workshop Report

Dietary reference intakes: calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, vitamin D,

  Vaccines for the 21st Century

Forthcoming in print, but available now on the web.

ASM JOURNALS, OR NOT?

I know from comments from the faculty that the ASM journals
are some of the most desired and cited journals of our
research faculty. We have had requests for electronic
versions of these, and I have been forced to say that this
is not likely to occur in the near future. Part of the
reason for this is unreasonable pricing on the part of
ASM for the electronic versions of their journals. An
exceptionally well-written review of this issue has
recently been written by David Goodman of Princeton,
and is circulating heavily among the library population.
I thought you faculty, as professionals in that area and
possibly members of ASM, are likely to have more influence
with ASM. For your information, the Goodman piece is available
on the web at:

http://www.library.yale.edu/~llicense/ListArchives/9910/msg00046.html

Additional information on the broader scope of this issue is
available at: http://www.research.att.com/~amo/doc/eworld.html

WHO NEEDS A LIBRARY ANYWAY?

This was the title of a recent speech by Stanford University
President, Gerhard Casper. Stanford recently built an large
addition to their existing campus library, partly to address
the same sorts of issues now being faced on a smaller scale
by the Dentistry Library. My favorite quote from his talk is:

"The search to know --the search for truth --has always been
characterized by the need to doubt, the need to be critical,
including being self-critical: looking not just for the evidence,
but for the counterevidence as well. The holdings of the university
library --paper, object and digital --are one of the means by which
the university performs its role as the custodian of that rational
   process."

The full speech is available online from Stanford's web site:

The student journal of the AMA recently had a special issue

as healthcare professionals and issues for patients.
