JOURNAL MOVE UPDATE
In response to popular demand, and for increased efficiency in the
library, the journals in the Dentistry Library are being rearranged
for strict alphabetical access by title. This new arrangement will
follow the pattern of how journals are accessed in the Taubman Library.
By the end of today (August 18) we will have completed bringing
ceased titles from before 1980 upstairs to the Mezzanine. You
will almost certainly require special assistance to access those
materials for another week or so. Current subscriptions will remain
on the main floor. Shifting has been completed in this area up to
and including the letter "J". This means that titles which begin
with the letter "J" or any letter before that are now shelved
alphabetically. Titles which begin with letters after the letter
"J" may be in transition still, or may be in their original location
on the shelves. Please ask for help if you have trouble finding
what you need.
We have found ourselves more short-staffed than expected for this
move, so it is taking longer than we hoped. We are all working
very hard to try to complete this move before classes start.
Your consideration and thoughfulness is *much* appreciated!
Thank you!

STAFFING CHANGES
There have been and will be a number of changes in the staff of
the Dentistry Library.
Olga Kolpakov, who has been the Supervisor of the Dentistry Library,
has accepted a position at the Taubman Medical Library in which
she will be doing computer support, web development, and you may
even see her on the Reference Desk when you visit there, so say
"Hi!"
Ken Eccles has accepted a promotion into Olga's previous
position and will now be coordinating the day-to-day activities
of the Library here. Congratulations to both Ken and Olga!
Thea Lindquist will be new in the Dentistry Library beginning in
early September. Thea is a Resident Librarian, and will be parttime
with the Dentistry Library for two years in this position. You may
see Thea at the long-abandoned Dentistry Library Reference Desk,
so stop by and introduce yourself. Welcome, Thea!

REMINDER: FACULTY DON'T GET LIBRARY FINES, EXCEPT ...
Many of the faculty are so accustomed to the way the library
system automatically forgives most of their regular fines, that
it is an unpleasant shock when fines are actually generated for
overdue course reserve materials (which includes all multimedia)
or for Recalls (items requested by another patron). Overdue course
reserves can generate *enormous* fines, at a dollar an hour, so this
is an area of particular concern. With recalled items which have not
been returned, this can also result in the loss of borrowing priveledges.
Please be forewarned, and be especially careful with these types of
items, or if you receive a notice that an item has been recalled.

NEW ELECTRONIC JOURNALS
The Library system now has the Cell Press journals:
Cell
Immunity
Molecular Cell

of Michigan is available at:

COCHRANE DATABASE AVAILABLE
The Cochrane Databases are the single most authoritative resource
for evidence-based medicine and dentistry. The libraries have
expanded our access to include the full range of all resources
they offer. Access is at:

FINDING DIGITAL IMAGES
The Dentistry Library has purchased a CD-ROM collection of dental
clip art, including clinical, anatomical, and patient education
images, even those for a pediatric audience.
LifeArt: Kids
Grant's Atlas Images 4 : Head, neck, and cranial nerves.
Dentistry Bundle
The Media Union Library has acquired the rights to the ACCuNet/AP Photo
Archive database. The archive contains nearly 700,000 Associated Press
current and historical photographs. All the photographs in the archive
include informative captions. The archive is updated every ten seconds,
adding over 800 new photos per day.

Indexed Visuals (>http://www.indexedvisuals.com ) is a new web resource that
connects medical illustrators with potential clients by offering
a searchable database of medical illustrations. You may find
images there which will save you creating or commissioning your own.
In addition, *some* of the instructional and multimedia CDs recently
purchased by the Dentistry Library allow the use of up to five
images for educational purposes with proper credit. If you see an
image you would like to use in your course lectures, please ask
for more information.

Y2K UPDATES, UM & OTHER
Following on the heels of the almost monthly messages about
Y2K issues, here is my new favorite, and probably the most
relevant web site for all of you. The Information Technology
Division (ITD) has compiled a website with information for
our UM Campus community. This includes accomplishments, purchasing
issues, recommended vendors, contingency planning, tools to
test your office computers, etc.
Check out the site at: http://www.year2000.umich.edu
You may also want to check out the information and links at the
Year 2000 Readiness and Responsibility Act site, emphasizing
legislation relating to these issues.

NEW GOVERNMENT TELEHEALTH WEB SITE
The newly founded Office for the Advancement of Telehealth (OAT) is
being provided by the Health Resources and Services Administration
of the Department of Health and Human Services and the United
States Public Health Service. They are now making available selected
resources from their website, including publications, legislative
updates, grants, and the Federal Telemedicine Directory 1998.

NEW WEB-BASED INSTRUCTIONAL RESOURCE
I have just received word of a set of basic life science instructional
resources available over the Internet. These are all based on previously
commercial CD-ROM programs which you may have used elsewhere.
The implication from the initial release is that this resource will
*continue* to be free, and will be funded through advertising.
The Integrated Medical Curriculum (IMC) is available from Gold
Standard Multimedia. This resource includes the following programs
from their CD inventory:
Human Anatomy
Radiologic Anatomy
Microscopic Anatomy
Cross-Sectional Anatomy
Essentials of Human Physiology
Essentials of Immunology
The Doctor's Dilemma
Clinical Pharmacology (Monographs only)
The Internet address is:
http://www.imc.gsm.com/
NOTE: The site requires registration, and has some usability
issues. Please test it on a computer with a lot of memory
and a good color monitor.

LIBRARY OF AMERICAN MUSEUM OF NATURAL HISTORY AWARDED $2M MELLON GRANT
The Library of the American Museum of Natural History has been
awarded a five-year, $2 million grant from the Andrew W. Mellon
Foundation to digitize materials from its collections. The
comprehensive project will ultimately yield the first integrated
database of museum library resources and natural history collections,
enabling scientists, scholars, and the general public to study
unique and rare materials at one web site. A five-year program
will link materials from the museum library's 440,000-volume
collection of rare and unique books and manuscripts, spanning
over 500 years of scientific and exploration literature, with
scientific material from the museum's 32 million specimens and
cultural artifacts.

MEDICAL JOURNAL RECOMMENDS NET TRAINING FOR DOCTORS
A new study from UM faculty cautions physicians of the
dangers of misinformation on the Internet at a time when
more and more patients are turning there. Academic
librarians who are accustomed to steering students away
from slapdash homepages might well find the sources
exceptionally reliable--only 6 percent of evaluated sites
offered blatant inaccuracies, while 42 percent were not
peer reviewed.
Most importantly, the study as well as an accompanying
editorial concluded that physicians must acquaint
themselves with web sites in their specialties, be open to
patients toting Internet printouts, and be ready to
recommend reliable sites. The authors further recommend
that computer literacy and Internet training be included in
post-graduate and continuing medical information courses.
