HEALTHWEB: DENTISTRY RELEASED TO THE PUBLIC

It is truly a pleasure to announce that the HealthWeb: Dentistry
collection of evaluated internet resources in dentistry has
formally moved from Northwestern University to the University
of Michigan, and has been been released to the public for
general use. I would like to thank personally all the faculty
and staff who contributed time and suggestions to reviewing
the earlier versions of the site, but the list is too long to
include here. Please *do* check the credits and comments section
of the site to see how your colleagues contributed to this
resource. Kudos also to the enormous effort put forth by all the
students and staff of the Dentistry Library.

We are always looking to enhance the site and will gladly take
suggestions and reviews. You can find the site in a number of
ways. There is a link on the main Dentistry Library web site,
or you can find it listed under the subject "Dentistry"
at the main HealthWeb site , or you can
go in directly at:

  http://www.lib.umich.edu/hw/dent/

MORE IMAGE SCANNING CLASSES IN CAIDENT

The Introduction to Digital Imaging classes last month were so
popular that we are repeating them this month. We have developed
a handout which guides you through the basic steps. While we are
happy to share the handout with you whether you take the class or
not, you *are* asked to take the class before using the scanners
in either CAIDENT or the library. New to this month's classes,
we will include a very brief introduction to creating your own
PDFs (files in portable document format).

Classes this month are from 12-1:30 on June 14, 16, and 18 (Monday,
Wednesday & Friday). If you didn't get a chance the first time and
are interested in taking one these class sessions, please register
by sending an e-mail to:

  dentistry.library@umich.edu .

COPYRIGHT OFFICE SAYS UPDATE FAIR USE EXEMPTION FOR
DISTANCE EDUCATION

Educators and academic librarians arguing against copyright
owners that fair use exemptions for distance education of
the Copyright Act should be broadened were supported by
recommendations in a report released May 25 by the
Copyright Office. "Without an amendment to accommodate
these new technologies (of digital transmissions), the
policy behind the law will be increasingly diminished."
The Copyright Office spent six months examining the application
of copyright law to distance education by holding public
hearings, conducting research, and consulting with experts.
Its full report can be found at:

  http://www.loc.gov/copyright/cpypub/de_rprt.pdf .

NIH POSTS COMMENTS ABOUT E-BIOMED

NIH has posted a selection of comments about its proposal
to create E-biomed, a centralized web site for biomedical
articles. The development of such an archive should be of
special interest to the dental profession as an opportunity
to reduce costs of publication, and maintain access to the
professional literature in an increasingly unstable publishing
environment. See:

  http://www.nih.gov/welcome/director/ebiomed/comment.htm .

Commercial publishers having been getting in their two-cents-
worth as well, and you can see some of their opinions in the
May 6 issue of NATURE. For the complete article, go to:

  http://www.helix.nature.com/wcs/b33.html .

At the same time, a recent survey, "What Authors Want," from
the UK-based Association of Learned and Professional Society
Publishers (ALPSP) shows that authors of research articles
want to see "electronic publishing with a rapid peer review
system might develop further than at present." More information
can be found at:

  http://www.alpsp.org.uk .
