NEW!!: HOW TO FIND THE DENTISTRY LIBRARY
You've already heard that the ground level entrance to Kellogg
is undergoing renovation, however you may not have realized that
this can potentially impact on how you get to the Dentistry Library.
To address any possible confusion over how to find your way to the
Dentistry Library, we have created handouts (available in the
Dentistry Library, or you can request to have copies sent to
you via campus mail) and a web page with directions and a map.

RESEARCH JOURNALS UPDATE
During March, the Dentistry faculty were polled for input regarding
the possible cancellation of four journal titles which are expensive
(all over $1000/yr) and three of which are duplicated in
multiple libraries on campus. These possible cancellations were
identified as part of a campus-wide cost-saving effort. The
responses from the faculty were informative and instrumental
in providing me with the decision-making information I needed.
Here is what happened with those individual titles.
1. EXPERIMENTAL CELL RESEARCH
Not yet available electronically. This will hopefully become
available in an electronic version during the coming year.
It will not be cancelled now, but will be revisited next year.
2. JOURNAL OF BIOLOGICAL CHEMISTRY
Significant percentage of faculty population asked to keep this
as a core title. No cancellation.
3. AMERICAN JOURNAL OF PHYSIOLOGY
Significant faculty requests to keep this title, although it was
a smaller group. Concern seemed to focus primarily on electronic
access. This issue is discussed further below. This title will
not be cancelled at this time, but will be revisted next year.
4. JOURNAL OF ADHESION
Cancelled. This cost for this title in the 1997-98 fiscal year
was close to $12,000/yr! There were no faculty requests to keep
this title. The library will gladly honor interlibrary loan
requests for any articles desired from this journal.
Part of the issue for many faculty seemed to revolce around a lack
of comfort in having only electronic versions as the primary mode of
access. As a subdivision of that concern, many expressed that if
electronic access was to become the default, then it is strongly
desirable to have the electronic access be in the form of PDFs, which
more accurately reflect the print original.
I proposed to the Health Sciences Electronic Collection Development
Team (E-Team) that we spend this year focusing on educational
efforts to increase the comfort level for electronic journal use, and
revisit this issue in another year. At that time we should have a
better idea of how well electronic access meets the needs of the
UMSD research community.
Meanwhile, the University Libraries does maintain a massive list of
all the journals for which the University does have access. Even though
it doesn't have everything you want (we are still in negotiations with
some of the larger publishers, such as Academic Press, this is a list
upon which I rely upon. I urge you, whenever you have an journal
article you can't find in the library, check this list! I will try to
keep you informed as significant new additions occur. The address is:

HEALTHY PEOPLE 2010 ON THE WEB
While the print copy is on order for the Library, you might find
it simpler not to wait, and just access this important healthcare
policy document via the web.

SCIENCE ONLINE
The journal, SCIENCE, is now available from the AAAS online, and the
University of Michigan Libraries have purchased access. The URL
is http://www.scienceonline.org . Even though there is a button for
"sign-in," you don't need to. Our subscription is IP based. Enjoy!

UPCOMING CLASSES
Upcoming classes being sponsored by the Dentistry Library:
Image Scanning: Introduction
In CAIDENT, every lunch hour, the week of May 24-28.
Bring samples!
Electronic Journals
June 2, Wednesday, noon in CAIDENT (registration required, 4-1526)
Some of you have asked about the upcoming classes for the Faculty
Exploratory (which is located in the Hatcher Graduate Library). Yes,
I usually list these classes at the end of my newsletter, but I don't
have a list for you this month. They are strongly encouraging all faculty
who are interested to explore and register for the "Enriching Scholarship"
workshops for this year's TeachTec, which has already been announced.
To register, or for more information, please look at the web site:
http://www.umich.edu/~teachtec/
Exploratory classes for next month will be announced on their web
site following the Enriching Scholarship classes. I will send
more information as it becomes available, or you can check their
web site for yourself.
