EMPLOYEE OF THE MONTH

Congratulations to Deborah Chen, the Dentistry Library's Student of the Month for April. Deborah works for the library's technical processing department, processing new journals and preparing the older ones for binding. Time and again, when the library has had a staffing shortage or a special project has come up, Deborah has stepped in and filled our needs with competence and grace. In particular, she has been been instrumental in performing the Dentistry Library's ongoing serials inventory and reorganization. Her extraordinary ability and versatility has been a great asset to the library.

NEW DATABASES

We now have access to the NORD database. This is from the National Organization for Rare Diseases and includes clinical summaries of several hundred diseases with craniofacial involvement. In the summaries, it also include recommended web sites for patient information, and does a particularly nice job of this. It requires a username and password to get all the information. Contact the Taubman Medical Library Reference Desk at 763-3071 for the password.

PUBMED & MEDLINEPLUS UPGRADES

NLM has enhanced MEDLINEplus (http://medlineplus.gov), its consumer health web site, with the United States Pharmacopeia Drug Information (USP DI), Volume II, Advice for the Patient. USP Drug Information is a guide to over 9,000 brand name and generic prescription and over-the-counter drug names. It provides information about side effects, dosing, drug interactions, precautions and storage for each drug. Because the articles are intended for the use of patients, they are written in non-technical language.

NLM has also added a medical encyclopedia , with over 4,000 articles and extensive images. The original provider of the encyclopedia is adam.com.

In collaboration with book publishers, NCBI is adapting books for the web and linking them to PubMed. The first book, Molecular Biology of the Cell by Alberts et al., is now available.

MEDICAL EXPERT SYSTEM ON THE WEB

HealthQuiz is an interactive patient interviewer designed by Dr. Roizen at the University of Chicago Hospital created to reduce the number of preoperative laboratory tests patients must take by generating expert recommendations for screenings based on established medical guidelines. Patients take HealthQuiz over the phone or on the internet and their information is stored in a database accessible to their relevant physician. This is an interesting development in healthcare with potential legal implications.
