NEW DENTISTRY LIBRARY WEB SITE
Thanks to all who resonded with wonderful suggestions for the
new Dentistry Library website. You can now find the complete
version of the web site at:
http://www.lib.umich.edu/dentlib/
The new version of the Dentistry Library web site is now also linked
through the main University Library pages (http://www.lib.umich.edu)
and the School of Dentistry homepage (http://www.dent.umich.edu).
In an effort to make our web site as useful as possible to you,
we have expanded the Local Links section. This now includes
links to local and regional news, maps, weather, and sports, in
addition to information about the School of Dentistry, the
University of Michigan and related resources.

LIBRARY SURVEY -- HELP US HELP YOU!
The School is planning a renovation of the Dentistry Library, including
a merger of the CAIDENT Center facilities. We are seeking input from
faculty, staff, and students about features of the renovation that are
most important. Please take a few minutes to respond to this survey and
help design a library that best meets *your* needs. NOTE: This survey
is available on the web, and you will also receive copies in your
campus mailbox. Please, ONLY FILL IN ONE SURVEY. Only members of
the UM School of Dentistry can fill out the online web survey.
Thank you all!

NEW EXHIBIT: LANDMARKS IN AFRO-AMERICAN DENTISTRY
There has been so much attention given to the new exhibit, that
an abbreviated version has been placed on the library web site, for
those of you who may not be nearby at this time.

REPORT: RESEARCH JOURNAL USE BY UMSD RESEARCH FACULTY
A study was done by the Dentistry Library this past year to examine
patterns of journal use by research faculty in the School of Dentistry.
A brief report highlighting preliminary results is now on the web site.

AUTHENTICATION TO UM-MEDSEARCH
As previously announced, the University Libraries have, in an
effort to increase the number of resources available to patrons
from their homes and off-campus locations, changed the procedures
to log in to databases and electronic journals. Among the resources
effected by the change is UM-MEDSEARCH. A number of patrons of
the Dentistry Library continue to have difficulty with this change.
Briefly, you must create a new account with the library system.
You do this at:
https://login.umdl.umich.edu/change-password
It is strongly recommended (for security of your e-mail password)
that you choose to use the LIBRARY METHOD, and *not* the Kerberos
Method. This is for your own protection. It does mean that you
must choose a new and different password for accessing library
resources. Follow the instructions online (there is a help button
at every point of the process). Additional information is available
at:

TAUBMAN MEDICAL LIBRARY PROVIDES LITERATURE SEARCH SERVICE
Too busy to do a literature search? Librarians at Taubman Medical
Library can provide expert fee-based searches of MEDLINE as well as
other less readily available databases. Searches are usually completed
within one day. Call 3-3071 to confer with a librarian about your
literature searching needs.
NUMERIC DATA SERVICES
The University Library system is now offering extra support for
finding and using numeric data sets, such as statistical data sets.
An announcement of this service is at:
http://www.lib.umich.edu/newnow/nds.html
The service's homepage is at:
http://www.lib.umich.edu/nsds/
NEW DATABASES
Not scientific, however relevant to the theme of Black History Month,
the Database of Twentieth Century African American Poetry is at
http://www.hti.umich.edu/d/daap20/.
One interesting feature of this collection is a series of author
biographies for the majority of authors with works in the database.
A list of authors, with links to the biographies, can be found at
http://www.hti.umich.edu/d/daap20/daap20auth.html

IADR DENTAL HISTORY WEB SITE
The International Association for Dental Research Ad Hoc Committee
on History has arranged to place on the web the full text of their
1973 book covering the history of the first 50 years of the IADR.
This amazing resource includes, for example, brief biographies
and photos of the early presidents of the association, many of whom
were or are still today recognized as formative leaders of the
profession. The University of Michigan is represented through a
number of faculty and alumni of the University and the School
of Dentistry, including Ura Garfield Rickert (faculty and President
of the Michigan State Dental Society), Russell Welford Bunting (Dean),
Philip Jay (faculty), and Clifton Orrin Dummett (alumni). In addition,
the site includes a review of dentistry from antiquity to the 20th
century, achievements of the first half of the 20th century, and
a timeline of milestones in IADR history.

The book itself is available in the Dentistry Library at call number

FINDING INFORMATION ABOUT MEDICAL DEVICES
Since there is no Consumer Reports for medical devices, how
would you decide what's best for your office or home? The United
Stated Food and Drug Administration maintains a number of web
sites devoted to this information. Of the links below, arguably
the most useful is MAUDE, which allows you to search by device
or type of product, giving information about reported device
failures, as well as the failure cause and outcomes (such as
death or injury). Very useful. Note also a similar site for
the United Kingdom, which should have some information on
devices marketed in Europe.

METRIC AND OTHER CONVERSION RESOURCES
Life can be difficult, but, with the proliferation of useful tools
on the Internet, there is no longer any reason to struggle with
converting a number from one standard to another. The great grand
master of conversion utilities is the MegaConverter, at:
http://www.megaConverter.com/
The MegaConverter include conversion utilities between metric and
US standard for distance, weight, volume, you name it. It also
includes utilities for calendar conversions, currency conversions,
and more. Definately worth exploring. For currency conversions,
my favorite tool is the Ultimate Currency Converter:
http://www.xe.net/ucc/
For metric conversions, quite a number of labs have put up their
own pages with this information, in order to make life easier
for their own researchers. Here are just a few.

Healthcare Industry in Transition -- The Online Mandate to Change
http://www.cyberdialogue.com/pdfs/white_papers/wp-cch-1999-transition.pdf
"Over 17 million U.S. adults searched online for health and medical
information in the last year, a number that could reach 30 million
within two years. ... Standing in the way of a thriving market for
online health services are numerous challenges, from concerns about
privacy to weaknesses in existing models for making a profit from
health information."
The Impact of Ecommerce on Legacy Health-Care Companies
http://www.cyberdialogue.com/pdfs/white_papers/wp-cch-legacy-1999.pdf
"Estimates are that the Internet today offers at least 15,000
different health-care sites, underscoring the large and growing
consumer demand for access to health-related information and services.
Consumer research conducted by Cyber Dialogue in 1999 found that 24.8
million U.S. adults search for health information on the Internet, with
the number of health/med retrievers projected to grow to 30 million in
the year 2000."
