NEW WEB SITE: BETA VERSION
The Dentistry Library is hard at work preparing a new website. This
new version of the web site is currently undergoing beta-testing
prior to its official release in early February. If you would like
to offer comments and suggestions for what you would like to see
added before our official release of the new site, please review:
http://www.lib.umich.edu/dentlib/
You may find this newsletter online at:
http://www.lib.umich.edu/dentlib/about/news/0001.html
NEW EXHIBIT: LANDMARKS IN AFRO-AMERICAN DENTISTRY
In honor of Martin Luther King Day and February being Black History Month,
the Dentistry Library is offering a new exhibit on Landmarks in Afro-
American Dentistry. The exhibit ranges from the 1860s, when Robert
Tanner Freedman graduated from Harvard's School of Dental Medicine
through the 21st Century, with a book on the topic by Drs. Razzoog
and Robinson. Please stop and take a look! For more information on
related topics, please see the Diversity Links section of this
newsletter.
AUTHENTICATION TO UM-MEDSEARCH
Starting January 5th, UM users who are out of town or who use AOL or
another service provider instead of UM services, WILL BE ABLE TO GET
ACCESS to most of the library electronic resources, including UM-Medsearch.
This does mean that the way you log in to use UM_Medsearch has changed.
The first time you try to access UM-Medsearch, it will ask you to
create an account for the new authentication method. ITD and the Library
are recommending that you choose the "Library Method" option for your
account. There is a detailed help screen available, so don't be afraid
to use it or ask for help.
There's a lot more info available about the new services through the
library main website and at
http://www.lib.umich.edu/electres/remote/faq.html
http://www.lib.umich.edu/mirlyn/authenchange/
NEW MINORITY DATABASES
Black Studies Database (1948-86)
from The Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture
http://biblioline.nisc.com/scripts/login.dll?BiblioLine&dbname=QBLK
A search for "dentist" found 276 records, including the otherwise
difficult to find:
Distribution of Negro dentists in U.S. NATIONAL NEGRO HEALTH
NEWS; January/March 1948; pp. 13-16
Gay and Lesbian Abstracts
(1997 & earlier - Present)
http://biblioline.nisc.com/scripts/login.dll?BiblioLine&dbname=QGLA
A search on"dentist" found 41 records, including the interesting:
Hazelkorn HM; Robins LS Actions speak louder than words: implications
of a dental experiment. J Public Health Policy, 15(2):226-34;1994
Both databases are accessible from the main library website (http://www.lib.umich.edu/),
under Networked Electronic Resources (http://www.lib.umich.edu/eresources/).
JOURNAL CITATION REPORTS
You've been asking for the lists of most important journals in
dentistry? Well, check out another new resource available from
the University Library system. Journal Citation Reports are
produced by ISI, the same folks who bring us the Web Of Science.
Journal Citation Reports
http://jcrweb.com
The Impact Factor derives roughly from how often articles from a
journal are cited in other journals. According to the JCR, the
dental journals with ten highest impact factors are:
Journal of Dental Research 4.060
Clinical Oral Implants Research 2.711
Critical Reviews in Oral Biology & Medicine 2.478
Journal of Periodontology 2.110
Journal of Clinical Periodontology 1.679
Journal of Periodontal Research 1.446
Dental Materials 1.434
Oral Microbiology and Immunology 1.347
Periodontology 2000 1.308
Caries Research 1.283
European Journal of Oral Sciences 1.283
JCR allows you to view data for a specific journal or by one/more subject
categories. There are concerns about inclusiveness, however it is certainly
a starting place if you are trying to decide where to submit your next
article. While this resource is easy to use and has excellent online help,
feel free to call or email if you would like assistance.
DIGITAL DISSERTATION WORKSHOPS
In response to the high demand for technology workshops from graduate
students, the University Library is sponsoring the "Digital Dissertation
Series." This series consists of hands-on, "how to" technology workshops
on such topics as PowerPoint and building web pages, as well as overviews
of resources in subject areas such as environmental studies or behavioral
sciences. For full descriptions and to register, please visit our website
at:
http://www.lib.umich.edu/instruct/digdiss.html .
NUMERIC DATA SERVICE AVAILABLE
The University Library is launching a new Numeric Data Service to aid you
in teaching and research. As an initial step, we have initiated an
agreement with the Harvard/MIT Data Center to improve our campus access to
data files from the Inter-university Consortium for Political and Social
Research (ICPSR). Through the Harvard/MIT Data Center, UM faculty,
students, and staff can search, order and retrieve ICPSR data at any time.
For selected datasets, the Harvard system can perform cross tabulations
or subset data. The URL for access to ICPSR data is
http://www.lib.umich.edu/nsds/icpsraccess.html.
The Library's Numeric Data Service will also make it easier for the UM
community to:
* identify & locate a dataset
* interpret documentation
* transfer files
* import data into statistical packages
* acquire & store datasets for class instruction
* access data from the Roper Center, DRI or other data providers
Additional services will be added as we grow. Numeric Data Service is
available in person, Monday - Friday, 1:00 - 3:00 p.m. at 203J Hatcher
Library North, via email at numeric.data@umich.edu,or on the web at:
http://www.lib.umich.edu/nsds/ .
The Library is also beginning development of local capability to manage
and make data sets accessible via the web. Work is underway, using
software acquired from UC-Berkeley, to develop local services for data
extraction, statistical applications, and data subsetting. If you have
datasets that you would like to suggest for campus deployment, please let
us know. We are also actively engaged in efforts to develop campus
partnerships to increase the availability, improve access, and ensure
sustained management of data sets and welcome your interest in
collaboration as well.
Please pass this information along to colleagues who would benefit from
this new service. For more information, contact numeric.data@umich.edu.
MEDICAL RECORDS RESOURCES
Medical records and health information confidentiality is a major legal and ethical issue currently. If you want to only remember one place to look for information on this topic, please check out the following resource.

WHEN DOES THE 21ST CENTURY BEGIN (& OTHER QUESTIONS)
For quick answers to off the cuff questions such as the one in the
title, there are some handy places to quickly check. For quick
answers to standard health and biosciences questions, you might
want to check HealthWeb's Reference section, which include
dictionaries, directories, and publication aids such as the ever
popular "Instructions to Authors" collection from the Medical College
of Ohio.
HealthWeb: Reference Resources

A great resource for standard academic questions is the web site
by our very own Graduate Library's Information and Reference Center.

One of the best general sources is the Internet Public Library's
Ready Reference collection. They include a well-developed Frequently
Asked Question section, which includes handy tools for such questions
as how to cite an e-mail message or web page, or the question in the
title of this article. So when *does* the 21st century really begin?
