Creep of Amalgam

Creep is a measure of the viscoelastic properties of a material. In the dynamic creep method, a compressive load is applied to a specimen to produce a fluctuating stress which is cycled from 500 to 10,000 psi (34.5 to 69.0 MPa) at a rate of 1800 times per minute. In the static creep method, a constant compressive stress of 5250 psi (36.2 MPa) is applied to the specimen. In the American National Standards Institute/American Dental Association's flow method (ref. 73), the specimen is subjected to a compressive stress of 1450 psi (10.0 MPa). In each method the change in length of the specimen is measured and divided by the original length.
