Collecting Strengths

The University Library boasts one of the nation's largest general collections. Journal holdings (print and electronic) in support of science, technology, and medicine are among the most extensive in the world. Likewise, the Library's commitment to international resources distinguishes it from all but a handful of libraries worldwide. The Michigan collection is truly remarkable for the breadth of its subject, language, and historical coverage. A few of the Library's pre-eminent holdings include:

  • Astronomy
  • Classical Archaeology
  • Dentistry
  • German History and Political Economy
  • Homeopathy
  • Mathematics
  • Military History
  • Papyrology
  • Scholarly Associations and Academic Societies
  • Social and Political Movements, especially Anarchism
  • Social Work
  • International Studies including China, Japan, Philippines, Judaica, Turkey, Western European History and Culture, and South Slavic Studies
  • Transportation history

In addition, the the Library's outstanding subject and language collections are supported by strong holdings in U.S. and foreign government publications, an outstanding collection of maps and related materials, a film and video collection for research and instructional use, over 1.5 million items in microform, and a strong collection of reference and bibliographic sources in print and machine-readable formats.
