Borrowing Privileges for UM Alumni and Guests

The University Library has three programs available that entitle you to borrowing privileges at all its libraries:

Borrowing Privileges for Guest Scholars

  • Regular faculty from other universities and colleges in the State of Michigan are eligible for free borrowing privileges. For details, please contact the staff at the Hatcher Graduate Library North Circulation Desk.
  • Faculty from CIC member institutions are eligible for guest-borrowing privileges. For more information, contact the Hatcher Graduate Library North Circulation Desk.
  • Graduate students from the three Michigan Research Libraries Triangle (MRLT) institutions (U-M, Michigan State University, and Wayne State University) can receive guest-borrowing privileges at any of the MRLT universities. For more information, check with circulation staff at the appropriate institution.
  • Currently enrolled graduate students from CIC member institutions are eligible for guest-borrowing privileges from member libraries. For more information, speak to circulation staff at your home institution.

Borrowing Privileges for Alumni & Unaffiliated Guests (for fee)

You may borrow from all of the libraries in the University Library system, listed below, with your Alumni or (unaffiliated) Guest Borrower Card:

  • Shapiro Undergraduate Library
  • Shapiro Science Library
  • Art, Architecture & Engineering Library
  • Asia Library
  • Askwith Media Library
  • Buhr Remote Shelving Facility
  • Fine Arts Library
  • Map Library
  • Museums Library, including Herbarium
  • Music Library
  • Social Work Library
  • Special Collections Library (in-house access only)
  • Taubman Health Sciences Libraries
  • UMTRI Library

You can request an application for an alumni or guest borrowing card at the Hatcher Graduate Library North Circulation Desk or print out an application form and return the completed form to the Hatcher Graduate Library North Circulation Desk:

IMPORTANT

  • Neither the Alumni nor the Guest Card permits off-campus access to online resources, borrowing directly through U-M's Interlibrary loan, or borrowing from the Bentley, Clements, Ford, or Law Libraries.
  • Joint access to the U-M System Libraries and Kresge Business Administration Library is available for a combined fee.
  • Privileges continue for one year from date of purchase and renewals may be arranged at the Hatcher Graduate Library North Circulation Desk
  • The Library may restrict the circulation of fragile materials.
  • Members of the Alumni Association may be interested in access to a select group of databases as part of association benefits.

Guest Card

Guest borrower cards are available to individuals not affiliated with U-M for $250 each.

  • Academic Guest - no limit on the number of items charged, items can be renewed, must present proof of academic affiliation upon application
  • Non-Academic Guest - limit of five books charged out at any time, no renewals

"Corporate" cards, that can be shared by multiple company staff are not available. Cards are intended for individual use and are not transferable. Unauthorized transfer of cards is cause for termination of privileges. Quantity discounts are available for multiple people from the same organization when multiple cards are purchased for the same period:

6 - 10 cards

$175/card

11 - 15 cards

$150/card

16 - + cards

$125/card

Michigan Research Library Triangle (MRLT)

Graduate students from Wayne State and Michigan State can receive guest borrowing privileges at UM through the Michigan Research Library Triangle (MRLT) program.
