Borrowing Privileges for Alumni and Guests

Guests and alumni may apply for borrowing privileges at the University Library. See below for details on applying as AlumniSpouse and Significant OtherAcademic Guest, or Non-Academic Guest. The following conditions apply to guest and alumni borrowing cards. 

  • You may borrow items with your Alumni or Guest Borrower Card from circulating collections of the University Library.
  • Neither the Alumni nor the Guest Card permits off-campus access to online resources, borrowing directly through U-M's Interlibrary loan or borrowing from the Bentley, Clements, Ford, or Law Libraries.
  • Privileges continue for one year from the date of activation and account renewals may be arranged at the Hatcher Graduate Library North Circulation Desk .
  • The Library may restrict the circulation of fragile materials.

Alumni Card

  • If you have completed a U-M degree program, you may purchase guest borrowing privileges for an annual fee of $125. There is no limit on the number of print items that can be charged out at one time and items can be renewed.
  • This card does not give access to online resources. The University of Michigan Alumni Association offers access to a select group of databases as part of its membership benefits.
  • Alumni borrowing privileges for the Kresge Business Administration Library may be arranged by contacting their circulation desk. Kresge also provides access to online databases through iMpact to alumni of the Ross School of Business.

Spouse and Significant Other Card

University of Michigan faculty or staff may request guest borrowing privileges for his or her spouse or significant other. The employee must have a faculty level position or a regular staff appointment at a 50% level or greater. There is no limit on the number of print items that can be charged out at one time and items can be renewed.

Academic Guests

Guests who are affiliated with a university or college are applicable for guest-borrowing privileges depending on the details of their affiliation. For all academic guests there is no limit on the number of print items that can be charged out at one time and items can be renewed. Guests must present proof of academic affiliation upon application. See below for more information.

Faculty from Michigan

Michigan Research Library Triangle (MRLT)

  • Currently enrolled graduate students from the three Michigan Research Libraries Triangle institutions (University of Michigan, Michigan State University, and Wayne State University) may receive guest-borrowing privileges at any of the MRLT universities. For more information, check with circulation staff at your home institution.

Committee for Institutional Cooperation (CIC)

  • Faculty and currently enrolled graduate students from CIC member institutions are eligible for guest-borrowing privileges from member libraries. For more information, contact circulation staff at your home institution.

Affiliates from Other Institutions

  • Affiliates from universities and colleges other than Michigan institutions and CIC member institutions are eligible for guest-borrowing privileges for an annual fee of $250.
  • Guest cards are intended for use by one individual, and are not transferable. Unauthorized transfer of cards is cause for termination of privileges. Quantity discounts may be available for those who wish to purchase multiple cards during the same time period. For more information, contact the Hatcher Graduate Library North Circulation Desk

Non-Academic Guests

  • Guests not affiliated with a university or college are eligible for limited guest-borrowing privileges for an annual fee of $250. These non-academic guests may only charge out five items or fewer at a time and are not able to renew.
  • Guest cards are intended for use by one individual, and are not transferable. Unauthorized transfer of cards is cause for termination of privileges.
