The University of Michigan Library seeks an entrepreneurial, collaborative, innovative, and service-oriented leader for the new position of Associate University Librarian (AUL) for Research. Reporting to the University Librarian, and collaborating with the other members of MLibrary’s leadership, the AUL for Research will embody the library’s mission to engage in all facets of the scholarly process, from beginning to end. By embracing the transformative role of information technology, the AUL for Research will forge exciting directions in a world where new and emerging epistemologies challenge us to exploit the interplay of learning, knowing, creating, and sharing. We are searching for an academic leader who views the library as we do: as an integral part of a world-class research university.
This new opportunity emerges out of the reorganization of the Library’s administration, which now consists of AULs for Learning and Teaching, Research, Library Operations, Collections, Library Information Technology, and Publishing, as well as the Director of the Taubman Health Sciences Library. The AULs for Research and for Learning and Teaching—interlocking, inseparable spheres—together will manage many areas that traditionally reside in Public Services and create an environment integral to research and to the development of scholarly literacy. This division of responsibilities reflects our response to changes in the role of the library on campus, as well as the growing need for deep and differentiated expertise in the research domain.
The AUL for Research will lead a group of over 70 talented staff, most of them subject specialists who cover a vast range of disciplines, scholarly activities, and research formats. Those in the Research area interact with scholars at all points in the scholarly process, providing collaborative assistance and guidance for a broad range of activities. Examples include fostering interdisciplinary collaboration, identifying funding, facilitating data management, and advancing campus dialogue around publishing. The interaction also extends to students and scholars around the world through the many well-developed global initiatives on campus and collaborations with industry and our community. The AUL for Research must possess substantial leadership and management abilities in order to sustain and explicate the diversity and range of expertise and service that the library delivers to the research enterprise at the University.
At MLibrary, we recognize that the creation of services to enable the use and reuse of data is becoming increasingly essential to research; we are seeking a leader with the conceptual and technical knowledge to advance this development. The new AUL for Research has an unprecedented opportunity to promote the design and implementation of campus-wide services that will facilitate the collection, curation, management, and preservation of data in support of qualitative and quantitative research methods in the humanities and the arts, as well as engineering, sciences, and social sciences.
The demand for support of text-based scholarship continues to grow. The AUL for Research must seek to build partnerships with academic departments and programs to address the entire range of research needs of faculty, graduate students, undergraduates, and staff; improve the climate for scholarly communication; effectively use instructional technologies; embrace new research resources while supporting traditional research methods; and encourage interdisciplinary research and collaboration across campus and beyond. The AUL for Research must be fully dedicated to public service, and to supporting the activities of our subject specialists and department liaisons.
As we envision the future and take specific steps toward our goals, we remain cognizant of our special role as a public institution, and our obligation to foster social progress through promoting ideas and information. Our pioneering agreement with Google, our seminal role in the creation of HathiTrust, our foresight in establishing MPublishing, our commitment to our copyright determination and orphan works identification efforts, all demonstrate our ongoing ambitions and commitment to these principles. We are proud of our accomplishments and expect no less of ourselves in the future.
The University of Michigan in Ann Arbor is one of the world’s leading research universities, with 19 schools and colleges and dozens of internationally recognized departments and programs that generate over $1.24 billion in annual research expenditures. MLibrary, one of the largest academic research libraries in the world, is an essential part of the University’s research efforts, and leads the transformation of the way libraries organize, preserve, and share access to knowledge.
The diversity in our collections and our activities is reflected in our people. We recognize that the cultural agility necessary to speak and to reason across difference is essential to our success as a university and as a contributor to the larger societies of the nation and the world.
We are ambitious for the University of Michigan Library and for this position. We are proud of our successes, of the energy we share, and the fun we have along the way; as we often say: “For a good time, come to the Library.”
The University of Michigan is an equal opportunity/affirmative action employer.
Review of applications will begin in mid-December and continue until the position is filled.
