About Asia Library

The Asia Library Homepage
was established in April 1994. It was one of the first
multilingual (English/Chinese/Japanese) web pages in North America devoted to East Asian Studies.
It has been maintained by the staff at the Asia Library of the University of Michigan.
The Asia Library supports the research and teaching activities in East Asian Studies in the University community. The homepage serves as an extension of the library's services, and plays an important role in assisting faculty and students by providing easy access to the networked information resources from all over the world.

The collection of the Asia Library, mainly in Chinese, Japanese and Korean languages, is an extension of the Graduate Library's research collections for humanities and social sciences. As of December 2004, it boasts 685,725 volumes of book, 43,564 reels of microfilm, 32,243 sheets of microfiche, 2,332 CD-ROMs, 2,467 current serial titles and 79 newspapers (382,376 volumes, 30,701 reels and 24,151 sheets in Chinese; 285,494 volumes, 12,198 reels and 8,092 sheets in Japanese and 17,855 volumes, 665 reels in Korean).

With the rapid development of electronic resources in the East Asia region, and the increasing demand from faculty and students
in the university community, the Asia Library is making great efforts to meet this challenge and to  continually maintain its excellence in both service and collection development.

The subscriptions to Zasshi Kiji Sakuin, a Japanese journal articles index, and China Journal Net, a Chinese full-text database, as well as purchase of numerous CD-ROMs in all three languages are examples of latest major acquisitions in electronic resources under the library's programmatic activities in collection development.

The Webpages developed by the Asia Library not only provide patrons with an easy access to the online information resources, but also extend the library's services with the newly developed sections: new book alert, online request forms for acquisitions and/or reference service.

As a member of the university community Asia Library always enjoys strong supports from the International Institute. It maintains close relationships with the Center for Chinese Studies, Center for Japanese Studies, Korean Studies Program and China Data Center, as well as the Business School, William Davidson Institute and Law School in resource sharing and other academic activities.

The Asia Library, as one of the units of the University Libraries, will continuously participate in programs and services provided by the Documents Center, the Knowledge Navigation Center (KNC), Faculty Exploratory and other libraries to serve the entire University community.
