Search Engines

To find a site you need to know its Web address (URL), use a compilation site, or use a search engine. Some things to keep in mind about search engines:

- They are selective in which sites they index
- None indexes the whole Web; most index much less than half
- They often accept fees to list sites prominently
- The thrust of many is commerce rather than scholarship

  • Google
The most popular Web search engine on college campuses, Google is often adapted to search only one site such as the University of Michigan or the University Library.

Different engines are listed here by category as well as alphabetically.

  • Web Searching
Annotations written by the Internet Public Library for search engines popular on campus. Includes tips on using each.

  • Web Archive
No one has inventoried the entire Web. The closest approximation is this archive, maintained privately, which takes frequent "pictures" of the Web. To search the archive you must know the complete URL of a specific site.
