Using Phrases

What are phrases? How can you use them to refine your search?

You can try each of the searches below using the Google search engine and compare your results with ours. [We performed the searches on July 19, 2005].

1. Click on Google and search:
radioactive cats

  • About 212,000 results
  • Not all web results contained the phrase "radioactive cats"-- some just contained the words "radioactive" and "cats" somewhere in the page.

2. Click on Google and search:
"radioactive cats"
  • About 9,070 results.
  • Each result contained the phrase "radioactive cats"... but did each result contain information on the "radioactive cats" you were looking for (the 1980 photograph by Sandy Skoglund) or something else (e.g., rock band, jokes, etc.)?

3. Click on Google and search:
"radioactive cats" "sandy skoglund"

  • About 840 results.
  • Each result contains text on "Sandy Skoglund" and "radioactive cats". Most results are about the photograph but many are consumer sites selling posters of the photograph.
  • But what if you want to find more reliable information from organizations that offer information on the photograph?

4. Click on Google's Advanced Search. Use the same search as above; it should already be entered in the boxes. Limit your search to the Domain ending:   .org

  • About 72 results.
  • The results are taken only from websites with a .org address that contain information about Sandy Skoglund's "Radioactive Cats" photograph.
