What Will An Article Index Do?

It will give you the information you need to find the article:

Citation:  Although the index may not contain the article itself, the citation will provide the information that you need to find the article.

Berry, Colin. "Like a folk tale." Print (U.S.A.) 2003: 102-107.

Citations identify published information to facilitate locating that information again. Citations of articles often include the author, title, magazine or journal name, page numbers and publication information. Citations of Web documents also include a URL and the day the information was accessed.

The list of the sources you used when researching your paper is called a bibliography. These sources are listed in citation format and follow an established style, such as MLA (Modern Language Association), APA (American Psychological Association) or Chicago Manual of Style. The bibliography allows others who read your work to verify facts or research the same information more easily.

Abstract:  The index may also include an abstract or summary of the article's content.

Discusses the work and career of the American painter, muralist, and installation artist Margaret Kilgallen (1967-2001). The author describes Kilgallen's use of colour, notes her frequent portrayal of female figures, and comments on her use of typography. He outlines her education in art and printmaking, focuses on her move to San Francisco in 1989, noting that she worked initially as a book repairer, and details her further study at the San Francisco Art Institute in San Francisco...

The abstract of an article is a brief summary of its contents. Abstracts can save you time by helping you identify the best articles on your topic.

Full text: The complete electronic text of an article is called the full text. Some databases provide entire articles online, others just supply the citation and/or abstract. Sometimes an index will link to the complete text of the article. Most of the Index databases will either provide the full text directly from their site or provide a link which will list other databases that provide access to the full text. This link will look like one of the following:
